Propaganda is “Information, ideas, opinions or images, often only giving one part of an argument, which are broadcast, published or in some other way spread with the intention of influencing people’s opinions and beliefs.” (Online Cambridge Dictionary, n.d.) Often subtle, Machiavellian ways are used to portray the message in order to shape opinion. “Propaganda can be as blatant as a swastika or as subtle as a joke.”
In order to start and propagate the wars of the Three Kingdoms propaganda was used to win hearts and minds of the many who tried to remain neutral of the divergent causes or who “tried to obey both sides”,. It was finally relieved after 105 days when Protestant troops reached the city via the river.The acting governor of the city,George Walker was received in London by King William.His journey there was a “triumphant progression”(Block 3 page 120)He published an account of the siege in 1689 ‘A true Account of the Siege of Londonderry’ (London, 1689, ). which had editions in german and dutch.William I actually used foreign editions as propaganda in his fight against catholic Louis XIV of France.On page 121 of block 3,fig12.3 we see an illustartion taken from his “The Protestant Crumbs of Comfort”.The first panel shows the powerful Spanish armada attempting to invade England ,the second shows the treacherous Catholic Gunpowder Plot with the protestant God’s eye protecting parliament and the third shows the arrival of William of Orange to a tumultuous reception to save protestants from the Catholic treachery of James II. Here Walker is linking the seige of Londonderry with previous Roman Catholic treachery which were defeated by the forces of Protestantant
