Propaganda During The Cold War

The Cold War was a conflict between two superpower countries of the world at the time, the United States, which is democratic, and the Soviet Union, which was communist. The Cold war started after World War II ended and lasted for 45 years. There weren’t military or direct forces used in the war. The war was basically two countries taunting each other to fight but was too scared to used nuclear weapon for fear of destroying the world. It was a war fought indirectly for power and control of the world. The United States wanted every country under communist rule to have a democratic form of government, while the Soviet Union wanted to spread communism. The Cold War was different than most wars because it was more of a propaganda war. Basically, the media fought the war instead of military forces.
It had decade long influence on domestic and foreign policies, cultural, political and economic aspects of American society. There were many events that were directly resulted from the Cold War. Propaganda being the weapon of choice during the Cold war influenced Hollywood movies agencies to create anticommunist movies. This resulted in a repetitive series of movies that helped to ignite a spirit of patriotism. However, it also helped to raise suspicion of communist activity in America. The anticommunist sentiment grew extremely out of control and worked against Hollywood actors and actresses during the HUAC hearings against suspected communists in Hollywood. McCarthyism played a huge role in the anticommunist sentiment. Senator Joseph McCarthyism used false accusation and fear to carry out aggressive investigation before the government or committees and agencies.
