Using the idea of probability to describe the outcomes of real life phenomena has been an invaluable tool for many different fields. The concern of the present discussion is blackjack. Though to some a seemingly trivial topic, the use of probabilistic strategies in blackjack and other gambling games has earned many players a fair amount of reward (Thompson, 2009). Indeed, some of the earliest applications of probability were motivated by gambling games (Jardine, 2000). In blackjack, the use of probability underlies the popular strategy of card counting, in which one keeps track of the current probabilities of the next deal (Thompson, 2009; Berlekamp, 2005). Hence, the present discussion will first briefly overview probability in relation to random events and then present its applications to blackjack.…

I and the other members aimed for a greater involvement of students in Math activities by conducting fun and creative contests for the whole student community. It was one of the most fulfilling opportunities that I have been given. When I got in at the University of the Philippines- Diliman (UPD) in 2013, I continued getting involved in helping others while being an active student at the same time. I joined ASAPhil-UP— Architectural Students’ Association of the Philippines— an academic organization of the UPD- College of Architecture, to do this. I worked under the Academics Committee of the organization that is responsible for educational activities such as design competitions, lectures, and other related events. Working for the organization even just for a year was full of new experiences and gained…

Throughout high school and college, many people may remember hearing the mathematic formula a2 + b2 = c2. Little do they know, this mathematical concept was made thousands of years ago and is still highly used in education and many careers all over the world today. This formula was actually originally created by a Greek mathematician named Pythagoras. The time period in which Pythagoras graced his presence on Earth happened so long ago that research on Pythagoras and his mathematical concept were not documented. This is important because many researchers argue if Pythagoras really came up with the Pythagorean Theorem or if it was just a legend or Greek story. After researching this topic, I have found that Pythagoras was more than just a “Greek story”.…
