Company Profile

Group 5 Consulting Co. is an engineering firm that has dedicated 25 years to the industry. Rated as one of the top firms in 2011, Group 5 Consulting Co. is a leading provider of engineering, construction, and technical services for public agencies and private sector companies around the world. The company also offers a full range of project management, planning, design, operations and maintenance.

Introduction

Group 5 Consulting Co. has reached an agreement with Oil Incorporated to start the process of developing a design for their new project. Oil Incorporated’s new project includes the design of two new vessels, which will be provided at their refinery in New Orleans. Group 5 Consulting Co. has agreed to provide the very best staff to seek out old and new ideas, technologies, and designs to successfully complete the project.

Group 5 Consulting Co. will incorporate a project manager approach that will provide the needed support, time, and organizational skills to complete the job. The project manager will have the full authority of managing the project and seeing that it goes according to plan. The project manager will select a project team which will include personnel from the following departments: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Piping Design, Operations, and Civil Engineering. The project manager will also select a project coordinator who will assist him/her in managing the time, schedule, progress, and budget of the project.

The project team will utilize a chain of command know as a Balanced Project Matrix. As shown in Figure 1, this matrix establishes the project manager as having top authority over the entire project. The lead discipline, which follows the project manager, is responsible for assigning personnel and implementing the work as assigned by the project manager. The lead discipline and the project manager shares equal authority when it comes to assigning and completing task. However, the final judgment comes from the project manager. This matrix will assist with the communication, organization, and completion of the project.

With the information provided from the project charter, team meetings, and meetings with Oil Incorporated; Group 5 Consultants were able to develop a project scope of work. This project scope of work is a detailed explanation of what Oil Incorporated expects for this design project. This scope identifies key deliverables, technical requirements, limits and other requirements agreed upon by Oil Incorporated and Group 5 Consulting Co.. With the help of this scope, the project manager can better manage what, when, where, why, and who will help make this project a success.

As shown below in figure 1 for the vessel project, Group 5 Consulting Co. utilized a balanced matrix chart to assist in completing this project.

Managing the Project

Stakeholder Network Analysis

To recognize and categorize project stakeholders, Group 5 Consulting Co. will utilize the Stakeholder Management Strategy for the vessel project. This approach will be used to identify stakeholder power, interest, and influence as it relates to the project. Implementing this technique will also assist in developing a communication system for project stakeholders. This communication system will allow key participants to gather feedback for project planning and gain support as the project advances.
