Problem Solving
Problem Solving Simulation In order to solve the problem it was necessary to first interpret the scenario. In completing the Riverbank activity, I took the following approach: I imagined the situation I identified the problem I understood the problem I found different strategies I evaluated the progress I eliminated the obstacles I thought about the solutions I implemented a solution The scenario of the problem situation was, a man had a dog, a cat, and a mouse that needed to get across the river one by one on a raft. If the man wasn’t there though, the cat would eat the mouse, and the dog would eat the cat. How does the man get all the animals across without them eating each other? After interpreting the problem, I chose a strategy and evaluated the progress. I took the trial and error approach. My first attempt was to have the man take the cat over and then the dog, but that didn’t work, the dog ate the cat. I then attempted to have the man take the mouse followed by the cat. Again that didn’t work, the cat ate the mouse. I then attempted to send the man with the dog first, but again the cat ate the mouse. After several unsuccessful approaches, I began looking at the problem in a different way. I decided to use heuristics as a solution strategy. Heuristics helps to simplify and solve problems, although it doesn’t guarantee a correct solution. Below are the steps to the solution that I came to: The man takes the cat across then goes back. The man takes the mouse across and the cat back. The man leaves the cat and takes the dog across. He leaves the dog with the mouse and goes back. Then the man takes the cat across The animals are now on the opposite side of the shore and safe. From the problem presented, I learned that solving a problem such as this required me to modify my thought processing skills. In order to help modify my thought

When I saw the problem, I first thought it was not going to be possible to solve. Meaning; that I would not solve this problem without more information. When I sent the cat over first the mouse and dog did not fight by their selves. Then whenever I sent the dog or mouse over, they would fight with the cat. I even thought about leaving the cat on the existing shore and trying to move the mouse and dog, and found that the cat fought with them there on the existing shore. My thoughts then were that there had to be a trick to this. I had a conceptual block and knew there was something else to the problem that was not mentioned in the writing [ (Morris & Maisto, 2002) ].…

When looking around the world today at our global civilization there are many problems that leap to our attention and everyone has a vested interest, one such example is food. Science has been tinkering with nature for the past one-hundred years trying to come up with solutions to help fight famine, and as a result, man made products have created ever more problems. The easiest way in which an individual or individuals can create change is to effect change in their local communities, so others can see an image of what the world could be. In my local area of Peoria County the topic of food is major problem and all of the issues that correspond, like genetically modified organisms (GM), pesticides, herbicides, cost of food, health of people, and the health of our environment. A practical solution to all these enormous problems we face when we walk through a grocery store and around our community can be fixed through the practice of local organic farming and community participation. With the help of volunteers in Peoria County we could begin growing organic produce that will help create, sustain, connect, and educate our community to help the less fortunate and build a healthier, stronger community.…
