Many students today are pressured by the present American youth and pop cultures to dress a particular way. This also means wearing a particular brand of clothing. Due to the popularity of the name brand clothing it is usually extremely costly to consumers. Many companies such as Lands End, JC Penny, Sears, Kmart, and The Gap, have designed a school uniform line that is both affordable and durable for parents and students (Atkins and Schlosberg, 1996). According to teachers in Long Beach, CA, the standard attire worn by students have constructed a more effective learning environment by curbing gang tension and the polarization associated with name brand clothing (Kelly, 2006).School uniforms can also reduce conflict stemming from socio-economic status. For example, comments and personal attacks about whom have better clothing and so on. According to Pamela Hoffler Riddick, principle of Ruffner Middle School when everyone is dressed the same way, distractions are not easily made between the haves and have-nots (Atkins and Schlosberg, 1996). This helps to put students on a more even playing field and helps focus on academic success rather than social economic status and peer pressure. According to Ramon Leyba, principle of Phoenix Preparatory Academy, school uniforms give parents another tool in the war against social pressures (Atkins and Schlosberg, 1996). Uniforms are said to help students concentrate on the academic aspect of school. Most students need help to concentrate and sometimes thinking about the clothes they are wearing and what others say about them distracts them a lot. Middle schoolers are always trying the newest trends to see if they look good on them. They spend most of their time thinking what they might wear the next day to school and what the kid next to them might say. Uniforms give students room to think about other things that are more important at that moment. They might think about a question on a test or what topic to do on an essay. This policy enables them to give thought to what really matters. Some say there is a correlation between uniforms and test scores. Students show a higher academic achievement when in uniform.(Bodine, 2003.) Bodine said in 2003 that a research done in 1998 showed that uniformed students had significantly higher test scores than those students uniformed. All students want to get good grades because that way their parents do not punish…

Although teachers and faculty view uniforms as a way to bind all students together, students find it that uniforms cause students to lose a sense of self and identity. As a result of being a product of schools requiring dress code and uniforms throughout my years of schooling, I tend to agree more with the teachers and faculty. Despite the fact that uniforms do prevent students from expressing themselves through their clothing, it also serves as a way to help students connect and disregard each other’s financial status based off what brands they can and cannot afford. According to Matt Buesing, uniforms helps to build a stronger and more sincere school pride and unity. School uniforms allow students to be less focused on each other’s differences and more focused on school and common interests.
