Pretty Little Liars
The object chosen is based off of a Freeform series called Pretty Little Liars. It is based off of the series of books written by Sara Shepard. Pretty Little Liars began on ABC Family in 2010. It is a television show that will begin its eighth season this month. Along with it playing on Freeform, seasons one thru six are available to stream on Netflix. By the title, it is understandable to assume that the girls on the show are prissy, pretty, liars. The plot of the show is five girls, who are the best of friends. They all are beautiful, fortune in the aspect of money, but yet are timid of one another. They constantly lie to their parents, each other, and their school. She was the most popular in the school. After Allison disappeared, the girls found out who the truly were. They built a more independent and courageous personality that made them determined who was trying to ruin their life.
In Colin Stokes’ Ted Talks “How Movies Teach Manhood,” he discusses the idea that Dorthy, from The Wizard of Oz, is a positive leader that is friends with everyone. The interpretation from Stokes message is that he wants to see women and girls to be portrayed in leaders in a positive light. However, Allison does not align with that thought. Allison was someone who was only friends with specific people and does not have an inclusive demeanor(Colin Stokes.)
Stokes’ also talks about the Bechdel Test is his Ted Talks. The Bechdel Test is the test to where if two females are talking in a film, are they talking about something other than the man they like, or their love life. The Huffington post reports that the Pretty Little Liars do pass this test by saying, “Sure they might commiserate about their love lives, but seconds later they’ll be back trying to solve a murder mystery. They’ve got bigger fish to fry.” The girls have boyfriends and girlfriends in the show, but their main focus is to find an end to whoever is doing this to them.     Social issues were touched upon making the story extremely controversial and yet somehow important for all teenagers to see. It touches mainly on racial discrimination and how at that school, African-American, Mexican and Asian students in gangs do not get a voice. As Mrs. Gruwell develops relationships with each and every one of her students, she learns that all they truly want is for somebody to hear them, for somebody to remember them if they die.
