Post-Bureaucratic Leadership Theory
Post-bureaucratic practices in leadership have branched from bureaucratic leadership practices (Grahn 2008). Current leadership practices have grown into a hybridization of democratic principles and bureaucratic forms (Josserand, Teo & Clegg 2006), and continue to grow further from bureaucratic leadership methods. As such, we examine traditional leadership theories and explore its roots to bureaucracy. Firstly I evaluate the movement from the trait theory by calling on the views of Galton contrasted to Conger & Kanugo (1994) and House & Aditya (1997). Following this is an examination of Rosen’s (2008) article that exhibit soft power controls as links to bureaucratic procedures of the behavioral theory. Adding upon the criticisms of democratic

Lord Acton Discussions of leadership typically glorify senior managers, a practice that seems increasingly suspect (Kellerman, 2005). This chapter examines the concept of discretion, defined as the degree of choice or "latitude of action" available to managers (Hambrick & Finkelstein, 1987). We propose that, although discretion is necessary for leaders to make positive contributions to their organizations, it also provides the potential for leaders to disrupt and destroy them. This dilemma has possible implications for the fate of organizations and even societies. Thus, given the tendency for academics to romanticize senior leaders, we focus on the dark side of discretion and how it links leader personality to organizational failure.     Leadership can be formal or informal. Formal leadership can depend on the personal skills of an individual or be reinforcing by authority and position. Informal leadership can be expressive in an individual who does not have a specified management role (Sullivan & Decker, 2009). Both roles are important to any organization that wants to form a good organizational culture and foundation. Sullivan & Decker (2009), address four leadership styles authoritarian, democratic, permissive, and bureaucratic, which have their strengths and weaknesses. Authoritarian has the leadership characteristics of using directive behavior and strives on goal accomplishments rather than relationships. Democratic has the leadership characteristics opposite of authoritarian as this individual has concerns with building relationship and strives for open communication (Sullivan & Decker, 2009).
