Portland State University Personal Statement
After climbing through the financial aid and admissions process, I am proud to confidently say that I will be attending Portland State University (PSU) in Fall 2017. Being a first generation student, this promise of a better future is an accomplishment not only for me, but for my parents. Being accepted in the TRIO-SSS program will help me climb over the battles yet to come. I hope that this program will assist me with guidance in my major, test strategies, and information for available opportunities.
I chose my degree based on my experiences living in a multicultural household (Slavic/American), completing various career classes, and visiting multiple countries. My goal is to participate in the Russian Flagship program and learn a third language--Arabic. I plan to apply these languages to my degree; my educational aspirations include obtaining a bachelor's degree in business with an emphasis in international studies. This aspiration feeds off of my desire for travel. The struggle comes in figuring out if this is really what I would like to do. Other subjects that I have a keen interest in include: graphic design, architecture, neuroscience, music, etc. I hope that I will receive a mentor that can guide me in the right direction. Additionally, I aspire to

I love the challenge of rigorous course work and the chance to expand my knowledge. Hence, I have taken multiple advanced and AP courses. Although I do fairly well in the course work, my shortcoming occurs on the AP tests. Out of the five AP tests I have gotten, I have not received anything higher than a 2, no matter how hard I try. Similarly, my SAT lower than anticipated. This is very discouraging to receive because I believe that these test do not accurately reflect who I am as a student. It is important to receive instruction on test taking strategies that will help me succeed. I am willing to commit myself to any measure necessary to achieve the success I

Upon entering my freshman year of college I recognized I was not fully prepared for the rigorous academic scheme provided at my school, Howard University. One of the main observations was my peers received educational training in Advanced Placement General Chemistry, Advanced Placement Organic Chemistry and even had the opportunity to attend actual college courses during his/her high school careers. Those classes were not an option for me through my high school. Soon I found myself falling into a pit of failure. Long hours of studying and tutoring only produced D’s, F’s and an occasional C on my Chemistry reports. I was thoroughly ready to quit. I still remember sitting in my professor’s office in tears when he informed me that my academic…

I started taking classes part-time at OSU my junior year of high school, and full-time my senior year. By the time I graduated high school, I took 40 credit hours of classes at OSU and had a 3.81 OSU GPA. Despite the tough coursework I found time to partake in numerous extracurricular activities. When I officially joined OSU as a freshman, I joined the small biomedical science major and biological sciences group. In these groups, I have not only helped my peers with their academics, but I have given them guidance on how to simultaneously manage both their academics and fitness pursuits.…

Today I received a message in my student email about my academic progress. I was denied Financial Aid due to my poor academic performance my 2015-2016 semester at Mesa Community College. The reason for not meeting academic requirements the previous semester was because of my lack of organization with working, sports, and studying. I take full responsibility in not putting my academics before sports and work leading me to write this letter. I truly believed I could juggle working 20 hours a week as a swim instructor and also be a student-athlete for Mesa Community College while maintaining strong grades. I soon found myself struggling in classes and doing poorly on exams because I was not using my time correctly and pushing my school work to the side. In high school I worked as a swim instructor and ran cross country as I am now, I put little effort into studying and did what I had to do to get by. Those poor habits followed me into college and are now backfiring with proof through my GPA.…

Overall, I am glad I choose to continue my education at UW-Platteville because it feels like home.…

Abilene Christian University exceeds my expectations of a Christian University. I would like to go to a school that not only calls themselves "Christian" but actually acknowledges Jesus Christ as the rock of their school and education. Personally, God comes first in my life, a university that feels the same is absolutely magnificent! My beliefs are such that it is not about a religion but rather a relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ. I do not belong to a denomination, I belong to God only because the relationship that we have is much greater than any religious personnel could give me.…

My school only offered AP classes to students who were seniors. As a Junior, I wanted to challenge myself, and prepare for college, so I decided to self-study for an exam. After doing some research, I decided that the best AP exams for me were AP Microeconomics and Computer Science. These topics were interesting and were applicable to my prospective careers. I found an online course for AP Computer Science. For AP Microeconomics, I bought an AP exam prep book. Though my aspirations and goals were great, being committed them was a true challenge. I still had to keep my regular school work and activities as a higher priority. I was able to keep track with AP Computer Science for the first semester, but I tried to get through its lessons and assignments…
