Poor educational standard is an issue which has been discussing globally. Matriculation is an important stage in the educational life of a student. The reason being it is a turning point or point of departure to different destinations. So utmost guidance and care must be given to students who are on that stage to get the desired outcome. Here the researcher is trying to analyse the various reasons behind the poor performance of learners. The researcher has decided to limit the study to South African matric examination. So the problem is what are the factors contributing to poor educational standards and matriculation results in South Africa? How can it be improved? Problem statement
The 2009 National Senior Certificate Results were released on 7 January 2010 the pass rate declined for the seventh year in a row and learner performance in key subjects like English, Maths and physical sciences also declined. The national education minister, Ms Angie Motshegka, could not hide her disappointment in this regard. She remarked that, “the drop in the results was a huge disappointment for the department considering the tremendous amount of work put into executing these exams”. Here the researcher formulates his question, “what are the causes of this situation?”
Significance of the problem
This is one of the major challenges faced by this country at present. Poor educational standards have an impact in the long run. Currently South Africa is one of the countries who are facing the challenge skill shortage although we have hosted the 2010 soccer world cup successfully. We are hiring experts, technicians and professionals from Asian and European countries. This will drain the economy of this country in the long run. At the same time the unemployment rate is shooting up to sky. That means South African youth is unemployed not because of the non-availability of job opportunities but because of the lack of expertise and necessary skills. More precisely job opportunities are there but suitably qualified people are not there to occupy the positions. This must be curbed by all possible means and the only way forward is to improve educational standards and in turn matriculation results. The researcher has realized that this issue as one of the major problems in the education scenario because, many things are going wrong around thus issue. But I feel that steps taken are not enough to control the situation. The major part of the remedial action being done is the shifting of blame in between the high school teachers and the junior school teachers. The department of education is budgeting millions of rand to finance the improvement strategies. But apparently that is not enough or it is not appropriately used. The researcher feels that a thorough study must be undertaken to iron out the root causes of our failure in offering quality education to our kids. In 1998, 1.6 million children entered classrooms around South Africa to start Grade 1 (EDOEC, 2010). It was a great achievement for the government led by Nelson Mandela. On their journey from Grade 1 to Grade 12, about one million of those children fell by the wayside. By 2009, only 551 940 scholars registered for the matric class. That is a staggering drop-out rate of 64 percent (Timeslive, 2010). There are many theories as to what happened to the rest along the way, including falling victim to the HIV and AIDS disease. But most of them are likely to have dropped out due to poverty, pregnancy and the lack of a culture of learning in some communities.
