Political Socialization
On the survey we took in class, I scored 16 liberal responses and 9 conservative responses. As for the economic and social political scale, I got 8 liberal responses for both. I expected this because I do feel like when it comes to economy we need more government, however on the social/political scale I believe we should have less government.
~Family has had a huge impact on my life. Without my parents, I wouldn’t be the strong individual I am today. My parents are not very religious, and have never pressured me into belief. My brother and sister are a major part of my life because we have been through a lot together throughout our childhood. I believe that family has had the biggest impact on my life than any other aspect.
~School has made me a very well educated individual, and if it wasn’t for all my teachers I wouldn’t have the outstanding knowledge I have today. However, throughout elementary school I was bullied for my sensory disorder which traumatically impacted me but also made me stronger and more confident. Some of my teachers were very difficult but it made me strive to try harder in school. Part of my sensory disorder symptoms is school failure, making it difficult to complete the simplest of tasks for everyday life.
~The community has negatively impacted my life if anything. I feel like people in Seattle are way ruder and self-centered than the people in Redmond, where I grew up. You would think it’s the opposite because Redmond is the rich eastside Microsoft incorporated city, but the people there and my true friends were much more genuine than my friends here. Drivers, strangers, at least most of them that I have had encounters with are very disrespectful. However, those made me just laugh and be appreciative of what a nice and friendly person I am.
~The media has had somewhat of an impact on my life, I don’t know whether or not it has been negative or

First of all, I was surprised by the results. In the beginning I was expecting to get a clear answer: either I had conservative viewpoints or I had liberal viewpoints. I did not anticipate that most people would fall near the middle of the liberal and conservative scale. During the class survey, my result was extremely close to the origin. In fact,…

I have not been very familiar with politics until I started taking this class. My mother is a democrat and father is a republican. I am a republican as well. I can remember my mom and dad arguing about who to vote for president. My dad has the most political influence on me. My mother and I rarely discuss anything that has to do with politics. As for my friends and other family members, never do we discuss politics.…

Political socialization can be thought of as the process by which a person attains his or her own personal political beliefs. I believe that political socialization is continuous development of one’s political outlook, based on the many influences one may encounter on a daily basis. An accumulation of these experiences will ultimately define an individual’s character by either altering or strengthening their current personal beliefs. This process of socialization has four major agents that will continue to influence us for the rest of our lives.…

Socialization is a process that human beings go through to learn culture and how to live in it (Fine & Shulman, 2003). This process involves a formal and informal training to learn the norms, values, and beliefs within that culture. The ideas of discipline within the family sphere of socialization divide political affiliates. Social democrats believe government does have a place in the family sphere when it comes to the vulnerability of children while conservatives believe the opposite. Social Democrats value equality and wish to ensure the rights of all groups involved, including children who cannot always protect themselves (Fine & Shulman, 2003). In other words government intervention is suggested even when the rights of families and the individual are in jeopardy to protect a greater right to not be beaten on and abused. The main problem in society is that the fine line between discipline and child abuse are not always clear. Social Democrats seek to protect children with government intrusion to ensure abuse is not even considerable. Ideally social democrats would like to have family experts enter into every home and teach the proper child rearing methods without corporal punishment. While the truth is that hitting children as a form of discipline can easily escalate into child abuse, social democrats don’t think hitting your children in all situation is safe whereas conservatives and libertarians will take the side that families are responsible for knowing the difference. Conservatives will even go as far to support corporal punishment in the home with religion and Proverbs 13:24, “he that spareth his rod hateth his son; but he that loveth him chastenth him daily.”…

As a result, I was still seeking approval from my parents and other family members. When I was in the third grade, I was failing math class. Since I was putting a lot of effort into the subject, my teacher didn’t think that my difficulty was due to apathy, rather due to some sort of cognitive disorder. As a result, the school psychologist tested my mental abilities, and she determined that I had a learning disability. Being labeled as a special needs student, I felt ostracized from the “normal kids”. While there were other students in the special needs classroom, most of them lacked the social skills to form friendships. Consequently, I didn’t feel like I “belonged” at my elementary school. However, I turned to my hobbies, singing and swimming, to cultivate meaningful…
