By: Holmes, Nolan While listening to radio chatter you hear officer shot, officer shot. Every officer in the department stops what they are doing and responds to the call. This is because there family member be it a brother or sister in uniform needs help. To really understand this type of family you need to understand police culture. First let’s explain the meaning of culture. Culture is a way of life that a group of people live. This life consists of their beliefs, values, behaviors, language, norms, and material objects.

There were a few standard values that police departments desired when reviewing new candidates for hire. Some of those values were as follows: “someone that is willing to enforce the law no matter what, community outreach, all calls are important and being excellent in crime control” (Moore, 1988). In today’s world one would think these values would evolve and change to meet the new demands of each department in our ever changing society. But as time has shown core values are unchangeable. Even though there are a few changes within the words the standard bases of the values remain the same and are still there. An example of this can be seen in the Delaware State Troopers values which are: “Honor, Integrity, Courage, Loyalty, Attitude, Discipline, and Service” (Hudson, 2014). These words are different although the meaning behind them and the similarity in purpose within them remain the same as the above text from 1988. Without these values in place for each police departments to set as a standard law enforcement would lose its integrity and ability to rule the laws of our land with authority. The laws that police officer are held to are the same laws that everyone in this country is held to but the only difference is that the police are held more accountability. The police are looked at more serious and harshly than normal citizens because they are the examples that we are supposed to look up to.
