Poe’s Claim to Greatness
Edgar Allan Poe, among other great poets, has earned his spot among the legends with his great literary works. Many poets aspire to achieve greatness by works that will elevate their writings to the status of legendary, ones to be passed down from generation to generation. Poe, with all of his ability, accomplished this by creating works of literary fiction that have lasted decades and caused many writers to revere him as one of the greatest writers of his time. Some of the reasons his works have endured are due the literary devices he uses to describe his settings, characters, and plots as well as other devices, all of which allow him to create such great works of fiction. The expectancy continues to increase as each beat aggravates the killer to a new height. Poe also uses symbolism to help add effect to the old man’s eye, he describes it as “all a dull blue, with a hideous veil over it that chilled the very marrow in my bones” (lines 66-67) and as a “Vulture Eye”. What is so contradictory about that description is that the color blue symbolizes cool and calm but to the killer it doesn’t resonate. A vulture also brings to mind death and evil which is not the way that one would normally describe an eye. This description gives the reader a vivid picture of the old man’s eye and may even cause some to experience a shiver down their
