Stanford and University of California alumni Sandra Lim reads from The Wilderness on April 7, 2015, at Prairie Lights. As an alumna from the International Writing Program Lim was making her return back to Iowa City after 11 years. In The Wilderness Lim reads a collection of poems about love, spring and one poem that caught my attention was about the individual struggle of one's body within one’s mind. The poems are open to many interpretations but that is the way that I chose to interpret that poetry in particular. The interesting thing about Lim’s poem is how describes the body parts in some of her poems. It is very vague. It almost makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable but at the same time, I really like her style. The way she describes…

The poem We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks focuses on what activities the troubled group of seven teenagers partake in to make them appeal cool. The symbolism, imagery and tone shown in, “We Real Cool” shows how losing one’s identity to become part of a uncaring group in adolescence and social norms will lead one to an early visit to the grave. Gwendolyn uses symbolism throughout her poem to get the readers to perceive the poem in an abstract way. In the subtitle, the word “golden” symbolises daytime and youth. This becomes an ironic name for the pool, because the wandering, carefree lives of the “pool players” seem to be anything but “golden” (line 1). By saying that the seven men “Lurk late,” the poem suggests that they are wandering around…

It’s hard enough for any cognizant American in 2001 to get some of the images of 9/11 out of their head, but when Burke uses words like ‘exploded’ and ‘rained’ when describing the jumpers from the towers, that calls those images back from the depths of the mind. This evokes pathos from the reader by reminding them of the graphic scenes, and by reminding them how lucky the survivors were to have had the heroic firemen there to help. Another word that sparks some images to mind is ‘servants’. This word seems to have a negative connotation: and rightfully so. ‘Servants’ brings to mind a peasant bound in chains and working for no reward. Burke uses this word to describe the first responders, and it definitely makes the reader envision the things that firefighters must do without much recognition. Images like this make the reader wish there could be more done for those who have served as first responders; therefore, agreeing with Burke’s argument that they should be honored at the 10 year anniversary of the september 11th terrorist attacks. Obviously, Burke’s use of imagery is key to the success of his…

In “Hanging Fire” The author shows how when you are in tough times don't give up and just keep going, even when you feel like there's nothing else. When you’re not getting much help from your family, keep going anyway. Nobody even stops to think about my side of it is a line from the poem that I thought connected to me. The reason I felt like it connected to me is because sometimes when I'm in an argument with someone, they don't feel like hearing my side of the story.…

Through the course of time, large groups of people have been enslaved by superior cultures. The Jews, whipped to build the great pyramids for the Egyptians, slave men who were forced to fight and die as gladiators in the Roman coliseum, and the Africans who were sold by their own people to the Europeans, all had to endure the cruelties of slavery. The author and narrator, James Baldwin has a constant tone of anger toward the white society through out the book. After thoroughly reading this book, I have concluded that Baldwin’s message about race in America is that the only way the country as a whole will prosper is to come together as one. He realizes that having animosity toward the white…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…

Regarding American soldiers during WWII, General of the Army Douglas MacArthur speaks of their heroism and calls them the world’s noblest people. Because of their dedication and acts of heroism, American soldiers are viewed as some of the most honorable men and women in the world. Alongside American soldiers, firefighters are also viewed as honorable for their work. This can be seen in a blog post by Patrick Bet-David titled “The 10 Most Honorable Professions.” Patrick Bet-David states, “ Firefighters don’t do it for the money or glory; they do it because they are driven to save the lives and livelihoods of other people” (Bet-David).…
