Poem Analysis: From Blossoms By Li-Young Lee
Poems are often an expression of one's inner emotions that regular words can not quite expose the meaning of. In Li-Young Lee’s poem “From Blossoms”, this is made clear through his use of imagery. His imagery presents itself throughout four stanzas, each unfolding his true emotions more and more. The first stanza, gives us a craving for more. The stanza provides us with a minimal amount to digest as a reader. Lee begins by starting the first line with the title of the poem itself. He paints an image of a “we” traveling by car and purchasing peaches from a boy on the side of the road. The first stanza is one sentence consisting of five lines. Although the lines initially make it seem like a poem about peaches, as the reader continues it becomes clear that the poem is much more. As the poem continues into the second stanza we begin to see more emotions unfold. As well as emotions we see the diction of words become apparent. For example, the word succulent is used instead of juicy. This more intense word fits perfectly for this stanza since the stanza itself is much more intense than the previous one. This stanza line by line allows the reader to devour where the peach came from and how it really tastes. The peach tree it …show more content…
But, that is the case for many poems. The poet chooses to write about their feelings through poetry because they can do so in an abstract way that leaves the reader wondering what they are really feeling. After many reads and careful attention, the central meaning and theme of the poems can be uncovered. In the case of Li Young Lee's poem ‘From Blossoms’, the theme eventually becomes clear. Life holds memories which allow us to be happy, but with every beautiful life, comes death. Death, although typically a morbid thought for most, is something which Lee feels is vital in order for life to reach its full beauty. Without death, life would not hold it’s special and unique

Stanford and University of California alumni Sandra Lim reads from The Wilderness on April 7, 2015, at Prairie Lights. As an alumna from the International Writing Program Lim was making her return back to Iowa City after 11 years. In The Wilderness Lim reads a collection of poems about love, spring and one poem that caught my attention was about the individual struggle of one's body within one’s mind. The poems are open to many interpretations but that is the way that I chose to interpret that poetry in particular. The interesting thing about Lim’s poem is how describes the body parts in some of her poems. It is very vague. It almost makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable but at the same time, I really like her style. The way she describes…

The second line of the text refers to flowers being picked during the day. The action of taking flowers out of their roots has a figurative connotation, because their is a separation between the flower and it’s roots, but their is no need to take out the flowers, it's an action without a purpose. Flower picking can serve as allusion to the life of Li Young-Lee because as he waits and time passes, he is left with no parental roots to guide him, and each moment that passes is each moment the flower is being taken out of the ground. Furthermore the syntactical absence of commas allow the free verse structure of the poem to be illustrated because although the words are structured in the poem, there is no structure for how the poem can be interpreted. So the poem can be a reference to childhood, or a reference to a loss of time. In this case, the stanza refers to Lee touching and reflecting upon his father's past which are apart of the book, and although this is true he is also losing time by reflecting and by picking the flowers. Although this all takes place in the past the present implications are that time is lost in Lee’s childhood because he spends time reflecting on the…

Li-Young Lee reveals the father’s fear of the his son aging and in time demanding more from him than he can give. While the son is only five years old in the present sense of the poem, the father still dwells on the future. Distracted by the what will come vs. the present moment, inhibiting him from focusing on what he has now. The father’s inability to tell a new story warps his imagination into something grim and dismal. Coming up with a new story is simple action but in the father’s eyes it’s the “burden” of not being able to please his son. At the same time the father loves his son immensely and is scared of the day his son will leave because he is unsatisfied. Overall, the father's love for his love and his inability to tell a satisfying story warp together, and create a future that haunts the father. Perhaps, this is why the father can not meet his sons demands; the father is too caught up in a possibly non existent future that it stops him from actually trying anymore because he believes he has already perceived the…
