Readings in poetry ( = 1 \* ROMAN I)
Langston Hughes, “Cross” (pp.48-49)
29 October, 2014
Paraphrase:
My father is old and white, and my mother is old and black. If I have ever wished my father ill,I take the bad wish back.
If I have ever cursed my mother and wished that she should go to hell,I feel sorry for the curses. Now,I wish that she is well.
My rich white father died in a nice big house, but my poor black mother died in a simple hut. I wonder where I will die, since I am neither white nor a black man?
Question 1
What different denotations does the title have? What connotations are linked to each of them?
The title of the poem contains several meanings, all of which underscore the main theme. This poem relates to the speaker’s inner turmoil because if his mixed racial ancestry.First of all,“crossˮcan mean“angry.ˮThe speaker was angry, or “cross,”with his father and mother for their passing on to him an amalgam of genes. After his anger subsides, he forgives them but still feels puzzled about his own background.Next, “crossˮis associated with “crucifixion.ˮHis hybridity is a burden, like a cross to bear. This association relates to the suffering of Jesus Christ, who must tolerate the pain of being crucified.Namely, his background will leave to him the trauma forever.Third, “crossˮindicates“a mixture of both.ˮBecause of his white father and black mother, the speaker is a“cross-breed.ˮThen, the tittle also points out the dilemma of the speaker.Symbolically,he is standing at an intersection,“a cross road,ˮand has no idea about in which direction he should move on. Finally,to“crossˮmeans to“traverse. ˮAs half black and half white, the speaker means to go across some limits existing between the two difference races. He tries to makes a crossover from his inherent background and previous emotions to a certain new stage. At first, the speaker admits that he was angry or cross at both of his parents, but,he tries to

My mom was from the heart of Belize and my father was born in Brooklyn, New York. On both sides of my family, my heritage goes way back. Booker T. Washington didn’t know much about his fathers heritage because he said his dad was white and he had no intention of getting to know Booker. I know that I'm a special child because not only do I come from a presidential line of family members, also I have talents no other ordinary teenager has.…

Mommy was, by her own definition, “light-skinned” a statement which I had initially accepted as fact but at some point later decided was not true. My best friend Billy Smith’s mother was as light as Mommy and had red hair to boot, but there was no doubt in my mind that Billy’s mother was black and my mother was not. There was something inside me, an ache I had, like a constant itch that got bigger and bigger as I grew that told me. It was in my blood, you might say, and however the notion got there, it bothered me greatly. Yet Mommy refused to acknowledge her whiteness.”…

“Slaveship,” by Lucille Clifton, is a free verse poem from the perspective of slaves that the white men capture and trade in the slave trade, forcing them to travel on the Middle Passage. Ironically, the ships bear the names of religious symbols and figures such as Jesus, Angel of God, and Grace of God (lines 14-15) even though the act of slavery is one of the most sinful systems in the eyes of these slaves and in the eyes of all decent human beings.…

In Desiree’s Baby, Kate Chopin shows how over valuing of white race and status can destroy a relationship and a family. Race and status are intangible ideas humans make up to segregate one another and should not be valued higher than a human life, but this is not the case in "Desiree’s Baby.”…

My grandfather is the only one of my grandparents still alive today. He is from Stony Creek, Virginia, and his father is from North Carolina though he grew up in Sussex, Virginia. His mother was a slave descendent and his father was a landowner. I could not retrieve names or dates for his parents' births or deaths or their marriage. My great-grandmother's biological father was white and her mother's race remains unknown to me. Because my great-grandmother had very pale skin and soft, dark and wavy hair, I cannot assume that her mother was of African descent or of Cherokee Indian descent as were several of my great-great aunts…

I never understood that. I had her green eyes, lips, and the same brown hair. I had my dad's tan skin tone, and awesome ability to fix EVERYTHING. It's to bad I couldn't fix any of this. My mother died when I was four. I watched her death. Two of the men my dad worked with broke into our home while our dad was away. Apparently my mom finally broke off the affair with the tall one.…

My family doesn’t fit in here; My mother, my brother pierre, and I are constantly in solitude. My father, Alexander Cosway, is no longer with us. Even though we are white, the Jamaican ladies still do not approve. They feel that my mother was and is too young and beautiful for my father when they married. This is coupled with the fact that my mother is from Martinique, a French colony: Jamaica is an English colony. We don’t get many visitors at Coulibri Estate, our home, since my father passed away. When I asked my mother why, she simply blamed it on the so called “terrible road” from Spanish Town. What she doesn’t know, however, is that I’m aware of the real reason: Her. My mother’s only friend is Mr. Luttrell, our neighbor. THey chat about the recent emancipation of Jamaica quite frequently and the fear of an ex-slave uprising. My family recognized black history month, attended a "Nation of Islam" mosque, a "holy ghost catching" church, and wore the wool-like mane unique to "black folk".
