Pledging Experience
This third week of pledging was a completely different experience for all of us. It started off with us in a low state, but everything that we went through and learned this week has made me stronger and more ready to get through this process and become a brother. I first learned about the pains of losing a brother. Our anchor, Shivum, was forced to drop because his parents were concerned with his academics. Although I respect his decision to leave, I was still very upset because he was one of us. I learned that even in two weeks someone can become like family to you. Shivum was a complete stranger to us on our bid night, but after two weeks he was our anchor and good friend. Before this process began, I was aware that people will drop throughout this process, but I know that I must move forward. Shivum was a good brother, but we all must move forward through this process. Although he is not with us in our fall 2015 line, the pledges of the Undisputed USP Colony will always see him as one of our brothers. …show more content…
Based on my conversation with Brother Michael Tibson on Saturday, I learned that Philadelphia was originally a city wide Gamma Warrior Chapter. Philadelphia has such a huge history with XXX and I was just astonished by it. Based on the information, everyone who was a soldier before the Tau class was a Philadelphia soldier. Brother Michael told me how the process used to be much harder years ago and seeing these soldier names gives me so much respect for them. I learned more about how important this brotherhood is to the people who crossed and the hardships they faced when going through this process. Seeing that huge list of Gamma Warrior Chapter brothers only motivates me more to be able to one day have my name written down with all of the brothers of the Undisputed USP

Once I saw my father almost lose his life for a lady he didn’t know. These are the kind of experiences that make me surprised he lived till this age. As people entered this place today, many walked up to me offering their condolences and mentioning all the various things that my father had done for them. Some said he was a brother to them while others hardly knew him. That’s the charm about my father. You didn’t have to know him before he sacrificed something for you. I used to dislike that side of him as he hardly had time for me. It wasn’t until we came to America that…

I will never forget today. It is unbelievable how much things have changed in only a small matter of time. The grief that consumes me is much like the loss of a family member, although me and Brother Malcom have no ties other than our religious and political standpoints. Still, I can not explain this overwhelming feeling of desperation. I can not help but think that someday this journal maybe of some value, so I suppose I should illustrate the events of today with my firsthand observations.…

Things aren't always as they seem. My great great great uncle Gutlib, was born sixteen years before the American Civil War was at its height. Gutlib bravely went to fight for the Union. Soon after he went to fight, communication ceased between Gutlib and his family. During the war, the family was unsure whether Gutlib was alive, all they had keeping them going was the hope that he was okay. After the war ended, the family still hadn’t heard from him for weeks, possibly months, and he was presumed dead. His family mourned his death, shocked that he was killed in the war. They held a funeral in his honor and were completely devastated by their loss. The weeks passed and nothing changed. Then one day, while looking over the hill that the family house faced in Pennsylvania,…

Captain Paul J. Matthews founded the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in the year 2000. This is the only museum dedicated primarily to preserving the legacy and honor of the African-American soldier, in the United States of America. Captain Paul has dedicated himself to find original items to show everyone that visits the museum how the buffalo soldiers survived in their time. The museum has many items that were used daily, the uniforms that were used by the soldiers, and not only is it focus on buffalo soldiers, it has some dedications to other African-America men and women that have achieve great things in our time. It was my first time visiting the museum and I personally recommend it I learned more about not only African-American history but American history as well.…

“…In looking forward to the moment which is intended to terminate the career of my public life, my feelings do not permit me to suspend the deep acknowledgment of that debt of gratitude which I owe to my beloved country for the many honors it has conferred upon me; still more for the steadfast confidence with which it has supported me; and for the opportunities I have thence enjoyed of manifesting my inviolable attachment, by services faithful and persevering, though in usefulness unequal to my zeal. If benefits have resulted to our country from these services, let it always be remembered to your praise, and as an instructive example in our annals, that under circumstances in which the passions, agitated in every direction, were liable to mislead, amidst appearances sometimes dubious, vicissitudes of fortune often discouraging, in situations in which not unfrequently want of success has countenanced the spirit of…

Every year, many high school graduates are excited to go to college to further their education and experience their first year as adults out on their own. Large amounts of these freshmen choose to pledge to fraternities and sororities. A problem with the pledging process is that the veterans haze the applicants which is the practice of initiating new members into a group by using harassment and humiliation. Many times, when applicants are hazed, the things they are asked to do could ultimately be considered bullying, harmful to themselves or others, and illegal.…

In general when someone talks about men in Phi Gamma Delta they think of loud obnoxious guys, who would rather think about the next big party than their next test or homework assignment. But when they take a deeper look into the fraternity you see men who are dedicated to their morals, service, and friendship. “A fraternity is an association of men, selected in their college days by a democratic process, because of their adherence to common ideals and aspirations. Out of their association arises a personal relationship which makes them unselfishly seek to advance on another in the arts of life and to add, to the formal instruction of the college curriculum, the culture, and the character which men acquire by contact with great personalities, or when admitted to partnership in great traditions”(Newton D Baker). Through exploring the history, power structure, slang words, rushing process, membership obligation, the way Phi Gamma Delta members dress, and how students who are not in a fraternity see the members. We will see how this discourse community can seem bias to outsiders.…

No one said being a soldier in the army was going to be a walk in the park. Being a soldier means you must have grit and guts and that you have to expect sacrifice. The Continental Army have been in Pennsylvania at Valley Forge since December 19, 1777, with the British only a few miles away in Philadelphia. We are suffering from all the horrible conditions, and many soldiers, since they have served their time, are leaving for home. I now have to make the final decision of either re-enlisting or leaving. I have thought long and hard, but I have decided to re-enlist, because healthy soldiers are needed, I still want to fight for my freedom, and because I want to support the inspiring General Washington.…

As always, there are many great reflections to consider as we are in the midst of the summer months and as we consider all of the wonderful things happening at Bethany. I figured for my July Musings, I would share information which happened at our annual Synod Assembly during the first weekend of June. Bethany sent 4 representatives (Myrriah Wertz, Travis McMasters, Jodi Johnson, and myself). I first want to thank you as members of this congregation for supporting these individuals who represented you in the most faithful way possible. I also hope the report which you will read in a moment will be one to inspire you of all the wonderful ministries happening within the Allegheny Synod Territory and the larger Lutheran Church. Our reps said how…
