Playing In A Softball Team
Playing in a varsity game for the first time as an eighth grader had me scared of what the team might think of me or if they would accept me. As the last couple of hours go on, my head kept winding of all the negative thoughts that could happen if I played. Finally, 2:30 came around and the softball team was let out of school early to load the bus for the game. The bus leaves and while I am sitting, trying to get my head on a swivel, coach calls the names out the players who are starting. My name was called first. I was so pumped that I was playing against a phenomenal team. Unfortunately, one negative thought stayed in my head until I got up to bat. Before I stepped into the batters’ box, I looked at coach and I could see the confidence he

When the first game came I was extremely happy yet nervous also. We ended up winning the game by the score of three runs to two although I did not get to bat at all and was put in only for two innings of defense. I was disappointed that I did not get to play much but I was happy with the win. Our second game was the next day and I hoped to get more playing time then. When that day came it turned out that we were playing an extremely skilled team. We were losing three to one in the last inning and I still hadn’t played at all the whole game. One of my friends hit a double and then another one of my teammates hit a single to knock him in to score. The score was now three to two and we had a chance to come back. My coach then decided that we needed someone faster on the bases so he called for a…

Baseball is a very commonly played sport. There was once a story that Abner Doubleday invented baseball in 1839 but that story was never really proved. The first published rules were written in 1845 for a New York baseball club by Alexander Cartwright. He is known as a commonly “father of baseball”. On June 3, 1953 congress officially gave Alexander Cartwright credit for inventing the current game of baseball. Alexander is a member of the baseball hall of fame.…

However, I was in a package against Big Lake and I shut down receiver. The following week in practice while I was working harder than even Coach Herberg came up to me and said “I’m starting you at the corner this week. You had a good game and you deserve it. Good job kid.” We were playing Willmar and I was very nervous. It was my first varsity start. Coaches said that was normal and said for me to relax. I played extremely well and I was very proud of myself. The following three weeks I have started and became more confrontable with playing on Friday night. My focus level was as high as ever and I was improving my talent day by day. Hard work does really pay off. I worked hard and did my job throughout the year and on the field. I listened to my coaches and stayed true to myself and I sure did pay off. I’m playing varsity and had kept the promise I had with myself last…

It’s the last game and we are warming up for the game. We were feeling super confident because we had just won the game before that. But as we see the other team we lost all of our confidence because they were all like 6’3 or taller. After warmups coach told us who was pitching and he said me. I was like what the heck I’m gonna get killed by these monsters. I was a squirmy as a warm cause I was excited to prove myself. As I’m warming up to pitch on the mound I was thinking of what pitches I was gonna throw. When the ump said batter up I knew that I was gonna have to pitch the ball low in the strike zone. The first pitch in the game I accidentally left the ball up and the kid whacked to the fence in the air. That was as fast as race cars start.…

    Laurel Baseball Narrative

Laurel high school has been the most glamorous of places to play baseball. The grass was scarce, dominated from large patches of dirt scattered across the outfield. Our batting cage left untouched for months at a time, creating a chest high jungle of weeds that consumed you as you entered. There were no perks of playing for the baseball program. The athletic director ignored us, the students didn’t support us, and the School wouldn’t adequately fund us. All we had were ourselves and an insatiable drive to succeed. I entered my freshman year out of shape, and with little baseball talent at all. I arrived at tryouts as an underdog, but I didn’t let that deter me. After three days of intense tryouts, I was named as a member of the junior varsity team. Unfortunately, The season didn’t go…

Hi , I’m Lilli Burton . I am in sixth grade, and play baseball with the boys. A barrier i have faced is trying to play baseball because I am a girl. Whenever I try - out , they say “ She would be great at softball.” I face the barrier in Summer and Fall when it is time for baseball. A lot of coaches are sceptical about putting me on their team, but I don’t let that stop me from trying and trying again.Until someone accepts me for who i am. To overcome this barrier , I used integrity by sticking up for my beliefs and not always caring about what people think of me . I also used determination by never giving up and try my best to get better and better everyday. My barriers are similar to Jackie Robinson’s because we both wanted to do something…

I could not understand how this could happen. My life was going as planned and this occurred. The only thing I ever really cared about doing in life was taken from me. I received a letter in the mail from my first choice school, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “Congratulations! We would like to extend an offer for you to join our softball team during the next season with a full scholarship to the program of your choice.” I was so excited. I could not believe they chose me out of all other athletes vying for the spot. Not being able to play was something I was never going to get over. I thought to myself, could I still attend this school even though I cannot play softball anymore? Would they still accept me even though I was broken? I was so torn up inside. I was not sure what to do next.…

My father, Coach Blake, told me to start the game off the right way and I did. The first pitch I hit deep in the outfield and got a triple. The team follow in them steps. The score of the game was our 8 to there 4. Then the team got cocky. That was a really bad idea through. We started to play horrible. We wasn’t getting on base nor playing good defense. The other team took over. Now the game was tied 8-8 and the game was coming to an end. It was our time to bat and we fail to score. It went three up three down. All we need was at least one person to hit and I would’ve hit again. All both Coach wanted was to get Torin and Me to hit. It fail to happen and now it was the other team turn to hit. The bases was load and they had two outs. One more out and we got another chance. Coach moved me from to catcher to pitcher and the pitcher to catcher. I throw the ball and the batter hit it down the third base line and they score. The game was over. We lose 9-8.…

In the Summer of 2017, I received a phone call that was full of excitement. Up to this point it was high school baseball season and I was playing baseball for Senior. Baseball is my favorite sport, so I dedicate a lot of time practicing and working out to get ready for the season. It was midway through the season when the big doubleheader with our crosstown rival Hempstead, approached. We ended up sweeping the mustangs which gave us the outright of the city championship. I went 4-6 at the plate, with four RBI's and my first career home run. The following weekend, my coach had told me that I had won TH Athlete of the Week and that I was going to be receiving a phone call. My phone finally started ringing and I quickly picked it. "Hello," I said…

The go to player, the first string pitcher, the girl who had it all going for her watched the game slip away as she walked or hit every girl in the opposing team’s lineup. I began losing confidence as each runner came across home plate, unearned. The little adjustments I made on the first couple batters developed into extremely bad habits. They say after a performance like that you are supposed to bounce back and get right back after it. Coaches say, “It happens to everybody.” Teammates say “Hey shake it off.” The only words I heard were “You deserve this”.…
