When applying the learning curve concept to a specific situation, the individual must first understand and comprehend the concept of the learning curve. According to Chase, Jacobs, and Aquilano (2006), “a learning curve is a line displaying the relationship between unit production time and the cumulative number of units produced”. Mario Pizzeria is looking for ways to improve upon customer wait times. The current wait time for customers is at least seven to nine minutes during peak times. This has left the customers frustrated and some leave without being served, thus affecting the profits of the restaurant. By looking at various scenarios, the management can decide how to operate more effectively.

The organization should learn from the results of their processes as well as changes in product design, equipment, and administration (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006). The simulation allows the user to use a series of steps to improve the efficiency of the pizzeria. The efficiency of how the tables are being used was looked at in the first of weeks. The pizzeria had the choice of choosing a counter within the store for takeout only or renting space at the bakery next door to add an additional seven tables of four and four tables of two. Renting the space was a better option for the restaurant because it allowed the restaurant to accommodate more customers during peak operating times. It was cheaper to rent the space than to having a counter within the store for takeout orders. By renting the space, the profit increased to $2,040 and decreased the loss in sales by $675 while the average wait time was less than four minutes. The wait time is well below the goal of less the nine minutes of wait

    The definition of McDonaldization is “The process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world” (Ritzer, 2004, p. 1). There are four main characteristics of McDonaldization which will be explained in relation to McDonalds. These characteristics are efficiency, calculability, predictability and control. Efficiency within McDonalds is demonstrated by the automated soft drink filling machines, the drive through where the customer leaves before they eat their meals and there is a selection of food is always ready for consumption. These examples help reduce the time it takes for a customer to arrive and complete their purchase which allows McDonalds to cater for a higher demand in a set period of time. Efficiency is also optimized by “the use of the customer as labour” (Nancarrow et al, 2005, p. 298) in ways such as them carrying their own food to tables and putting their own waste into the bin. Calculability relates to how the organisation measures its performance and sets its targets. With regards to McDonalds this calculability would come from “the quantitative aspects of products sold” (Ritzer, 2004, p. 13). These aspects could include the portion size of a meal, the time it takes to cook a burger or how long it takes for a customer to order and receive their meal.
