pit bulls
Many people don’t know the history of the pit-bull or where this breed comes from; they just go with the common misconception of the dog. The legal definition of a pit bull is a class of dogs that of which includes the following breeds: American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, American bulldog and any other pure bred or mixed breed dog that is a combination of these dogs. Weight and shape can vary significantly amongst pit bulls, from 35 to 100 plus pounds. Today’s pit bull is a descendant of the original English bull-baiting dog.
These dogs were bred to bite and hold bulls, bears and other large animals around the face and head. When baiting large animals was outlawed, people turned to fighting their dogs against each other instead. The larger, slower bull-baiting dogs were crossed with smaller, quicker terriers to produce a more agile and athletic dog for fighting other dogs. Some pit bulls were selected and bred for their fighting ability. Which means that they may possibly be more likely than other breeds to fight with dogs. It doesn’t mean that they can’t be around other dogs or that they’re unpredictably aggressive. Other pit bulls were specifically bred for work and companionship. These dogs have long been popular family pets, noted for their gentleness, affection and loyalty and even those pit bulls bred to fight other animals were not prone to aggressiveness toward people. Dogs used for fighting needed to be routinely handled by people; therefore aggression toward people was not tolerated. Any dog that behaved aggressively toward a person was killed, to avoid passing on such an undesirable trait. Research on pet dogs confirms that dog aggressive dogs are no more likely to direct aggression toward people than dogs that aren’t aggressive to other dogs. All of these negative traits can also be easily avoided
Early positive experiences, most notably socialization, are considered key in preventing aggressive

Pit Bulls are commonly recognized as wild, vicious and inherently dangerous animals, which is false. “Singling out a particular breed or type of dog has repeatedly been proven to be ineffective because breed alone is not predictive of whether a dog may pose a danger” (The HSUS). How can you look at any given dog or certain breed of dog and know whether it is dangerous, just by the way it looks? The answer to that question is, you can’t.…

The American Staffordshire Terrier (also known as Pit Bull) is believed to be a man-eating beast. But is this breed all it's made out to be? The Pit Bull started in the Unites States; it has been developed since the early 1800's as a result of crosses between the bulldogs of that time and game terriers. Although the early ancestors of this breed came from England, the development of the American Staffordshire Terrier is the story of a truly American breed. This type of dog was instrumental in the success of farmers and settlers who developed this country. They were used for general farm work, hunting wild pigs, bears, and other large game, guarding the homestead, and general companionship. A number of the early ancestors were also developed for…

Few dogs are as renowned and as feared in America as the Pit Bull. The American Pit Bull Terrier is the product of interbreeding between Old English Terrier and English Bulldogs to produce a dog that combined the gameness of the terrier with the strength and athleticism of the bulldog. These dogs were initially bred in England, and arrived in the United States with the founders. In the U.S., these dogs were used as catch dogs for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt, to drive livestock, and as family companions. Some have been selectively bred for their fighting prowess. The United Kennel Club (UKC) was the first registry to recognize the American Pit Bull Terrier, in 1898. It can be challenging not to…

Pit bulls are not a bad breed of dogs as people say they are. They're nice dogs when treated right. They are only aggressive but they're breeding and training. They can't be bad dogs because they don't have a conscious. Michael Vick proved the dogs could be rehabilitated and put Into good homes. All but one dog was ruled safe from aggression. Would it surprise you to learn that pit bulls used to be America’s darlings? Before the mid-80s, stories of pit bull attacks are practically non-existent. There is even some confusion over exactly which breed of dog is a pit bull — the definition includes the American pit bull terrier, the Staffordshire terrier and, at times, the bulldog. This confusion seems to have dogged the breed from the beginning,…

They are quite loyal dogs. Pit bulls tend to make terrible guard dogs, they love people too much. However, this is not always a good thing. Pmarinc says “because pit bulls are so people-orientated they do not make good guard dogs. Unless you just want them to smother intruders with hugs and kisses.” Also, because pit bulls love their owners so much, they will do anything for them. Even if their owner is a criminal commit crimes. The myth that pit bulls are extremely vicious is false, pit bulls are only vicious if you raise them to be. Pit bulls were bred to be in dog fights and that is why they got a bad…

Pit bulls and terrier breeds were created in early 19th century, for the popular spectator sports of bull- and bear-baiting. In 1898 the UKC, Britain's equivalent of the AKC, named these bull dogs the American Pit Bull Terrier. The AKC decided to recognize the breed in the early 1930s--but under a new name. Intending to separate it from its pit-fighting past, the AKC named it the American Staffordshire terrier, also known as a pit bull. These dogs have been used for protection not only in homes but in war, with the police and even with celebrities. Unfortunately, this same breed of dog now has a bad reputation, being called a vicious breed of dog and bully’s. I would have to disagree though, I believe that yes, there are some very mean pit bulls out there but there are also very nice and even famous ones. Not all pit bulls can be bad they aren’t born that way, they are raised that way. Saying a pit bull is born aggressive is kind of like saying a baby is born to hate.…

Pit bulls are the most misunderstood dog breed in the world. When people hear the name pit bull they automatically think of dogs fighting and attacking. Pit bulls refers to a range of breeds and, often, a mixed-breed dog. People think they are a very dangerous breed of dog. Because of this, some areas do not allow pit bulls and breeds like them.
