Piano Concert Comparison
Comparison Between Piano Concert by Barbara Wieman and Sacramento Chamber
Orchestra

February 20, 1997 William Strang

On Feb 20,1997, I attended a piano concert that was performed by Barbara
Wieman. The performance was held at the American River College Music Department choir room. The choir room holds about 100 people and every seat was taken and students were seated on the floor. The audience was dressed casual as everyone was students trying to do their concert papers. Barbara Weiman was also dressed casual but nice. The piano concert started at 12:20pm and was finished at 1:05pm.

The program started with a piece from L.V.

Beethoven called Sonata in F minor, Op.57. This piece can be characterized by an intense, dramatic use of

Mozart's Serenade, which is like a tiny symphony, was conducted and played with exemplary care. The tempo of the music was upbeat, it's dynamics were managed thoughtfully, and the musical form presented consisted of alterations that were superb. The "romance" of the second movement was hushed and tender, the finale was as light as air. After the finale of Mozart's we were treated to the Dvorak Serenade in E opus 22. The Dvorak was in five movements lasting a little over half an hour.
The waltzes of the second were a bit of folk flavor, and were quite beautiful.
The third movement, Scherzo, was dance like and soulfully romantic. The fourth movement,Larghetto, was even more soulful in mood, which deepened as its melody passed from the violas to the cellos. The finale brought us back with a touching recollection of the very beginning of the work.

The Bartok Divertimento was in three movements. It can be best described as continuous, fascinating, exciting and full of action. The melodies were strong, as were the rhythmic pulses and dissonance's. So much was happening that all you could do was go for the ride and enjoy it. The last major piece was by

Erin R Eddins Mozart Symphonies 39, 40, 41 Performed by The Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle My first impressions of the conductor held fairly true throughout the performance. Sir Simon Rattle is perhaps the most enigmatic master of the baton I have had the pleasure of watching. This is quite an interesting observation, since he doesn’t use a baton.…

I attended Michelle Cann’s piano performance in Wellin yesterday, November 13th. It was a 6 part performance that spanned multiple works from various famous composers such as Fredric Chopin and Geroge Gershwin and was a terrific display of Cann’s technical ability and ability to connect emotionally with the pieces she is playing. There were several interesting pieces during the performance, but two pieces I found particularly interesting and engaging was the piano suite created specifically for Cann by Michael Leibowitz and the concert Arabesque on themes from On the Beautiful Blue Danube by Andrei Schulz-Evler. Both of these works were roughly 10-15 minutes a piece and were a terrific testament to Cann’s overall style as a pianist and her…

A Romantic orchestra is being played that guides a tenor voice singer and a chorus of female voices. I love how each of the instruments makes a very gentle sound that the voices of the singers flow together. The dynamics are very gentle until the very end of the song where the sound of the tenor voice and the instruments get very loud to close the song.…

For this assignment I chose to compare and contrast two concerts. The first concert is from the modern era, while the other is a Baroque Era concert originating from the 17th Century preformed by a modern day orchestra. The Baroque Era Concert takes place in a large modern day Lutheran Church in front of a small crowd of well dressed onlookers. The second concert that I chose for this assignment is a modern day rock concert from the English Symphonic Rock Band, Muse. This concert takes place at the O2 Sheppard’s Bush Empire Theatre in London, England. The crowd is large and ruckus, the concert is loud, bright, and energetic.…

The surrounding area was very nice in the fact this seemed like a true orchestra. Everyone on stage was quite formal. The ambiance reminded me of a classic venue, besides the fact that people were not dressed up. Other than that, it reminded me of a normal orchestra concert. The conductor was quite intriguing and it was very interesting because there was a combination of college students and young children. The first song that they played was Entrance of the Queen of Sheba by George F. Handel. This song had a very cheery note int he fact that the tempo was upbeat and portrayed something very happy. This song almost reminded me of being in a Disney movie and something dramatic happening and when it was just the flutes playing, it was a pause…

The performance started out with the musicians entering the room one by one as they played and opening song, and settling down in their positions. I really enjoyed the movement and the energy they brought with them into the room because it seemed to wake most of the audience up, as some had been waiting for a while. One of my favorite sounds to hear within the music was that of the tuba, which provided the bassline heartbeat. It…

Not thrilled to go to this concert, I brought it to myself to go anyways. There were a few reasons I decided to go. One, the date worked out well for me and I needed to get this done. Two, my professor Dr. Mapp, yourself, was one of the conductors so I felt like I could relate better possibly. Lastly, a fraternity brother of mine in Sigma Phi Epsilon, Russell Budden, was playing the horn and I took this as an opportunity to listen to him play, especially after hearing what Russell can do on the piano that is in our house. So, on the night of October 1st I walked across campus from my fraternity to White Concert Hall.…

The first piece that was played sounded like a love song. It was mellow and slow. The piece was romantic, almost as if someone was about to propose. The solo violin dominated the piece beautifully. The second piece played had a quicker rhythm to it. It moved along almost as if children were playing gracefully in the park. This piece also focused primarily on the solo violin. Other instruments followed the violin's lead, playing the same verse…

Okay here we go. This is it. I have never felt more nervous about previous piano recitals than I had on the night of my very last. It would be the last performance under the tutelage of my piano teacher of ten years, and one more chance for perfection. The sweaty palms and butterflies in the stomach amplified my nerves. Being last presented its own pressures. As the student before me finished up Arabesque by Debussy, I said a little prayer. I adjusted the squeaky bench, took a deep breath, and as if with a mind of their own, my fingers began its familiar dance to the third movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. Once just an endless piece that I knew as the bane of my existence, the exquisite music suddenly became the most important piece that I had ever memorized. I was proud of my performance. Even though I made a few mistakes, the numerous compliments made up for them, and I reminded myself that everyone is their own worst critic. When my teacher gave her annual end-of-year speech, she called me up to present me with a bouquet of flowers and to express her joy of being able to watch me mature in a passion we both shared. Okay here we go. This is it. I have never felt more nervous about previous piano recitals than I had on the night of my very last. My favorite two pieces in this concert was “Sleeping Beauty Waltz”, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and “Elegy to the Blind”. “Sleeping Beauty Waltz” was especially sweet. It was almost like a lullaby. The piece was fast and strong at times and at other times soft and sweet. I especially liked the climax of this piece. It had contained This piece is by far my favorite piece in the ones that people played at this concert. I recognized the tune from many places. I feel like parts of the tune was used in Tom and Jerry, which I watched a lot when I was younger. “Elegy to the Blind” was also a very pretty piece. I really enjoyed listening to it. Although my sister, who was in that concert, didn’t like that…
