Physics: The Physics Of Roller Coasters
The independent variable is the rise of the ramp,the dependent variable whether or not the marble will loop the loop. The underlying principle of all roller coasters is the law of conservation of energy. When a roller coaster crests the first big hill,gravity takes over. Potential energy is sometimes known as positional energy. As the roller coaster falls is has enough kinetic energy to make it through the remainder of the ride. Inertia keeps the object in motion. The other forces bring the roller coaster to a stop by friction. Since roll coasters don’t have motors they need to be pulled up by a chain up the first big hill. No engine is required because of inertia. The roller coaster won’t last forever. Two of the significant energies are friction …show more content…
That feeling you get is caused by two forces countering one another gravity is pulling it toward the at the same time inertia is pulling you toward the top of the loop. On the roller coaster you are converting potential energy into kinetic energy. The history of the roller coaster stretches back to ice slides constructed in the 18th century russia and spans all the way to the many and varied coasters of today. It is known that by 1817 two coasters were built in france called the les montagnes. The first roller coaster was made out of wood in january 20, 1885, it was also called lamarcus adna. They were designed so that the axle of each car fit into an open area carved in the side of the track and served as an equivalent to the modern day upstop wheel. The first roller coaster to go upside down was the matterhorn bobsled. It was the first steel tubular roller coaster.     As the height of the roller coaster increases, the speed of the marble decreases; and vice versa. When the height of the roller coaster is at it’s peak, the highest point, and the motion of the marble is going uphill; the speed has less kinetic energy than it has potential. The potential energy is being stored up, as the marble’s velocity is at an upward motion. Once the ball reaches the highest point and starts moving in a downwards motion, it releases the stored energy and gains kinetic energy. While the marble is in motion, both the potential and kinetic energy have to be balanced. For example : the top of the second hill contains a 50-50 relationship between kinetic and potential energy. As the ball goes downwards, the kinetic energy becomes more than the potential energy, and vise versa when the ball goes uphill. As an example, positions 1 and 5 are the positions that the object gains potential energy; the speed at position 1 is 38.31 cm/sec, and the following two speeds show the effects of kinetic energy. Position 2’s speed is 150.79 cm/sec and position 3’s speed is 180.95 cm/sec. On position 4, the object gains potential energy and loses kinetic energy because of the uphill motion, speed at position 4 is 155.74 cm/sec; and on position 5, the speed is 106.74 cm/sec.
