Personal Narrative: California Screamin
The shrieks and screams of those before me, I later learned, were of joy, not fear. Yet, while I stood in line for California Screamin’, I was positive that I had just condemned myself to approximately sixty seconds of torture when I agreed to accompany my friend on the ride. I took a shaky breath, clenching my clammy hands into fists and staring up at Mickey’s sinister smile on the sign, attempting to trick me into complacency. The sugary scent of churros and the chaotic hum of the amusement park around me did little to console me. The happiest place in the world? Yeah, right. At that moment, I was anything but happy. I was terrified. And I hated it. My lengthy and troubled past with roller coasters stems from my acrophobia and my preference to keep my two feet solidly on the ground. I could never comprehend how some actually enjoyed being tossed around like rag dolls and having their heart leap into their throat. During the entire duration of my first time on a drop tower ride, I had my eyes shut tight and my mouth clamped shut. Surely …show more content…
Six years later, but time still hadn’t changed my opinion. I looked at the ride, the unforgiving sun glinting on the cold steel. An icy shiver ran down my spine, my palms getting clammier by the minute. I glanced at my friend, jealous of her indifference. Hanging onto the railing, I silently cursed myself for being so afraid. So weak. This wasn’t about riding a roller coaster that scared me out of my wits anymore; it was about proving that I could conquer my fears. My pride wouldn’t let me have it any other way. From the moment that I agreed to go on the ride, I knew that I would have to follow through with my decision. I couldn’t be that little girl who was too frightened to have fun anymore. I didn’t want to be the one left on the bench while her friends ran off to enjoy themselves. The only way to change that would be to prove everyone wrong. To prove myself

Going to Southern California, no one would think of packing an umbrella. Why would they? California is in the middle of a drought. When someone thinks of California, they think of baby blue skies and palm trees along the streets. But, of course, the weekend my family decided to visit Disneyland, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld is the weekend Southern California experienced what the local news called a “tropical depression.”…

“ Come and eat.” Joe,the leader of the trip, struggled to say because he was so tired, “Breakfast is going to be light this morning because we have along day head of us.” We all struggled to get out of our tents considering it was 5:30am and there was a mountain we had to start climbing in a half hour. All thirteen of us stood in a line like we did the morning before while we packed our lunches. The options available to us were an apple, cheese stick, peanut butter and jelly to make sandwiches, but only 2 per person, yogurt and 2 bottles of water. All of that would have to fit into a back pack with us the would be stuck to our backs for the rest of the day. “Time to load!” Joe shouted. We all got into the van that seated 16, single file until very seat was filled.…

One day I came home from school and saw a moving truck in front of my home. The first thing I did was find my parents to ask them if we were moving. They both said yes, all of us are moving to Fresno California. I was afraid because I had lived in Modesto my entire life and was very comfortable here. I knew my way around Modesto and especially my school where I had many friends and knew the teachers well. Modesto, after all, is my hometown and now I'm transferring to a foreign place. When all of us arrived in Fresno we stayed there a couple of weeks and realized the house had a huge amount of issues such as with leaking water pipes, a broken heater and a variety of other problems. My dad said “Maybe we are not meant to live here”. Finally…

I’ll never forget having to leave my friends and family behind and having to move across the country. It was the summer of 2008, and I was 10 years old at the time. The huge brown boxes, indicated the progressive yet subtle hints of our departure. I did not know why my father took the job in Washington D.C., but I did know that I resented him for it. However, it wasn’t long before I realized the move was for my own good. Back in California, my family lived in a tightly cramped two bedroom and one bathroom apartment. I soon realized moving to Virginia gave my family unspeakable opportunities, those that some take for granted, such as being able to live in a single family home. Coming to Virginia was similar to coming to a foreign country. The roads were different, the people were different, and the atmosphere was different; everything seemed foreign.…

After we had finished eating, we walked over to a roller coaster we had all been wanting to ride. The roller coaster was called The Mean Streak, and It was an old wooden roller coaster that looked scary. While we were walking over to it, we saw many shops, and water rides. We could smell the freshness of the water, and could hear the screams of the people on the rides. About ten minutes of walking later, we reached our destination. We didn’t hesitate, and walked right into line, weaving through barriers, and walking up several flights of stairs. When we reached the top, it looked as if the ride was shut down. We saw nobody in line, and there were only two workers waiting on people to arrive. We didn’t mind, because that meant we could get on quicker. We walked over to the front seats, and jumped in. We searched for the seatbelts, clicked them in, and pushed the safety bar in. The employee started the ride, and…

It was a surprisingly warm night during the summer. Everyone in the house was sound asleep in their rooms except for me. I was watching a show on the laptop in my room when out of nowhere I hear a bone chilling scream from the neighbor’s house next door. Before I knew it I was out of bed putting on my shoes to see what was happening. When I opened the front door I saw a bunch of other neighbors turning on porch lights to see what was going on too. What I saw next I could never un-see, it was the sweet old man that lived next door crouching over his blood stained wife. The problem with this image though is what he didn’t do. He wasn’t crying over her body in sorrow, nor was he standing in shock, instead his face was covered in blood and…

Walking towards the rusty and rigid gates of the theme park, they opened slowly and excited children flooded in. In the distance, I could see the giant red rollercoaster and I couldn’t wait to have a go. It was suddenly very noisy; children were screaming and shouting like soldiers charging into battle. A sudden rush of butterflies hit me. I couldn’t wait to get going.…

Anticipation grows consistent with every step I take along the gritty concrete labyrinth. Beneath a blazing sun, the smell of baked asphalt, sugary cola, and pretzel surround me. I follow the unpainted, gray chain fence that leads me forward. Overhead the deafening whirl of metal and screams briefly fill the hot air. The consistent drone of greasy motors and hissing pneumatics engage my curiosity. My heart rushes like a child on Christmas morning about to receive a favorite toy. Gone is the trepidation felt at the ticket stand. Trying to see through the myriad of people, my novice eyes grasp the breadth of what I am about to do. My mind is absorbed by its brutish presence; encompassed by its enchanting disposition.…

“Wooooshhhhh!!!” At blast off, California Screamin, took us through twists and turns, with an upside down loop. People were screaming their lungs out when the steel roller coaster soared into the air like a rocket. The terrifying speed made my toes curl and the strong wind pushed my head against the rubber black seat. I cried bloody murder on the coaster as it fell plumb down almost touching the ground. All too soon, it was over. After I got off of the thrill ride, I found my haggard look with disheveled hair through a snapshot picture. This is simply too awful to contemplate.…
