Physics 81 Essay
Carmela Marie C. Beloso
Why Do I Want to Become an Engineer? Why do I want to become an engineer? Is a question I often ask myself and often have difficulty answering. When other people are asked with this question, they would have instant answers such as: It’s been my dream since I was little, I like machines, It’s because of LEGO., My father is an engineer., and etcetera. I wish I could have the same answer as them. I wish I could tell a story where when I was young, I would take my toys apart and try to figure out how it’s made and how it works and that is how I was inspired to be an engineer , but sadly my story is not like that. As a child I would often play a game of pretend (I would pretend to be something I wanted to be). I would pretend to be a teacher, a doctor, a nurse, a pilot, a scientist, a veterinarian, an astronaut, and the list goes on, there was even a point of my childhood where I wanted to be a pirate. An engineer was never a part of the list of what I wanted to be. I don’t know why it was not included, it just never was. You might wonder if I never did want to become an engineer as a child, then why am I studying engineering now. Answer is: A twist of fate. Engineering was not really part of my plan. I wanted to pursue medicine. I fill-out my college (UPCAT) application form with first choice in campus (Manila) with the degree program of Pharmacy and Industrial Pharmacy since a second choice in campus was needed I opted for UPLB wherein I wrote Engineering(Industrial and Agricultural) in the degree program. Writing Engineering in that application form was one of the riskiest things I have ever done, it was a spur of the moment. I just told myself that whatever happens happens. Imagine my surprise when I passed and got into the degree program of Industrial Engineering. This is the story on how I got into engineering. Time has flown. Things have changed. If you ask me before if I want to be an engineer, my instant answer would be a

I have been interested in science and math since I was reading books with science experiments in second grade. Applying math and science skills to solve everyday problems has intrigued me from an early age. I am always curious about how things work. Since taking AP Physics this year, I have been able to appreciate how math and science work together. I have taken other rigorous courses, but often it felt like learning math was isolated from other coursework. Math challenges me to problem solve and think at a higher level. I also love science, but until I took AP Physics my science classes were too easy. The labs in freshmen and sophomore science were enjoyable, but I never got a sense of how they connected to other concepts in Biology and Chemistry.…
