A student’s motivation is what drives them to be a physical therapist. If a student is not motivated, it is unlikely that they will perform at the level of excellence required from physical therapy programs. Time is wasted for everyone involved including the student's, professors and fellow students. In a physical therapy program, a student must be motivated to demonstrate that they can provide excellent care to a future patient. Personally, I believe a student’s motivation is defined by setting a life goal to serve others by improving their physical abilities which, in turn, improves their way of life. A strong work ethic is necessary for the many hours of studying and learning required to complete a physical therapy program. A student who is not willing to learn and keep up with the work, will end up falling behind, causing themselves to have more work. Staying on top of assignments may be difficult, and why students with a proper work ethic end up succeeding more often. Work ethic is not only about getting the work done, but ensuring that the work is done correctly. A lazy student might take shortcuts or perform a task incorrectly which increases their chances of making incorrect decisions with a patient's therapy plan and future work.
The utmost characteristic is for a student to have a desire to serve others rather than themselves. Without a desire to serve others the purpose of physical therapy is lost. Physical therapy is a health care profession and requires helping people who do not have the knowledge or discipline to help themselves. There is no greater meaning in life than to provide service to others. Students with goals of accumulating money or accolades ruin themselves [and in time, will be disappointed,
