The United States Coast Guard (USCG) does not have a service wide physical readiness test (PRT). The USCG requires members only to meet physical fitness standards during specified training environments, operational qualifications, and while on weight probation. Currently the USCG uses weight standards as the sole unit of measure for health and well being. While weight management is a valuable part of health and wellness, its focus is more imaged-based rather than providing conclusive data. Implementation of a PRT would not be flawless, but would increase the accountability of the health promotion program and promote readiness. A semi-annual test would provide accountability and encourage compliance. The Coast Guard must begin conducting…

I’m willing to bet that if I went up to ten random people, that few to none of them would really know what an Athletic Trainer does. Most people are not educated about the role of Athletic Trainers because they are relatively new to the health care system. I believe that education is the key to making Athletic Training even more successful than it already is. For example, most of the club sports players at Towson have no idea that they can visit the Athletic Training clinic. I’ve heard the phrase “do no harm” so many times, but the possibility to do good decays exponentially when people don’t know what Athletic Trainers do and when those who should have access to this form of health care don’t know that they do. Though educating others about Athletic Trainers is one of my goals, it is not the main reason I want to become one. I want to be an Athletic Trainer because I…

Athletic training is a field of medicine often overlooked and misunderstood by those not familiar with its practice. An understanding of the muscular and skeletal structures of the body is necessary, and it largely deals with working alongside both professional and amateur athletes. I find athletic training to be an interesting career path as I would be working alongside athletes and helping them to overcome injuries that effect their everyday lives. I feel that athletic training would be a rewarding career as it allows you to actively serve others and help change their lives in ways many other professions are unable to do.…
