Have you ever woken up feeling groggy and not wanting to go to school or do anything at all? As a result, many students go to school late or do not academically progress and participate in class. According to the Scholastic Scope article “Should School Start Later?” by Justin O’Neil and the article “Sleepy Teens: High School Should Start Later in the Morning” by Mark Fischetti, many schools are considering starting school later to help students succeed academically. Students have more trouble concentrating in class because they are not getting enough sleep. Some students arrive at school later because they oversleep. To make sure that there is less tardiness and the academic growth increases, schools are looking…

Why do we have school for 9 months straight and then lose all of the knowledge we learned because we are too busy swimming in the pool and not caring about the date of World War 2? Students should have school all year round because we can learn so much more, we won’t have to remember everything we learned from 3 months ago, and relationships between students and teachers will be much stronger.…

Starting school later is a big decision for students, teachers and also parents. Students get tired and to a point where enough is enough. When there is late start because of bad weather, students seem to get to school and be alert. It is very hard to wake up in the morning for some students because of the night before they might have had to do homework or get caught up doing errands and they seem to go to sleep late and they don’t get much hours of sleep. Schools need to think more about students academics and really look into if that student is behind, or is not getting enough sleep and do something about it like make school start later. School should start later because students always complain about how early they have to get to school…

More than 40% of all schools in America start before 8 A.M. every day (Dretzke). Research also shows that adolescents need a minimum of nine to ten hours of sleep every single day to perform at their best (Dretzke). This means students must go to bed at 9 P.M. on school nights to get the necessary sleep leaving only one hour every morning to get ready, eat, and commute to school. Because adolescents need a minimum of nine to ten hours of sleep every day, school should begin at a later time because of student’s performance, their breakfast, and the negative effects of sleep deprivation.…

Parents, along with the United States are spending less on education making the children not put their best into school because of people putting less focus on education. Students are more worried about paying bills, not going into debt, keeping their job and what they are going to eat that week instead of focusing on school. ‘While students are working 19 hours on average, many work more than 20 hours a week and some even hold a full -time job. while a little bit of work can often build character, and teach students time management skills, too many hours of work can have negative consequences,” (Fang). Education is the fundamental key to our everyday lives. Knowledge is what keeps our economic growth possible. We are all taught, since childhood, that learning is a way to empower one's self, which is why our school systems are an important part of our society. Recently, a debate has emerged as whether the year round calender is better for our students than our current ten month calender year. While three thousand other schools may have had their districts change their school systems to work year round, we must not do the same. A year round school system would do little more than frustrate us and our parents while costing the school board more. A year round system would limit our vacataions, our ability to hold summer jobs, and would put us…

According to a study conducted by EducationNext, “moving to middle school leads to a substantial drop in student test scores in the first year of the transition, and the relative achievement of middle-school students continues to decline in the subsequent years they spend in such schools.” One aspect of the educational system that I think can be vastly improved is middle school. Although middle schoolers are faced with numerous challenges, the middle school curriculum does not allow students to explore their interests and more importantly, doesn't challenge students enough. In middle school, there is not a lot of advanced coursework that students can complete. This is why I believe that middle school students should have the opportunity to take a more strenuous curriculum by allowing them to take high school classes, as this system will give students the curriculum that they need to succeed and it will give them an abundance of time to explore their interests.…
