Although I am currently an undergraduate at Kellogg Community College, I have big plans for myself as I use my knowledge of Human Services to enrich and advance my experience into Children’s Education. The helping profession has supplied me with valuable skills that have not only refined my mind and everyday actions, but I have personally utilized them within my field.

Over the past two semesters I have completed a practicum and internship for each. As I applied the techniques I have learned over the course of my college experience to kids aged 4-13. These opportunities have helped me come to the conclusion that I will continue to teach and mentor children in a school setting.

Helping others is my passion.

I have spent the majority of my life watching my father’s garment business grow from a small shop in Santee Alley to a large warehouse on Broadway Street. Over the years, I have learned a lot about the culture of the inner city; I have had the opportunity to see the differences between my life growing up in Santa Monica and the life of the struggling families and homeless people who live downtown. Motivated by this to devote the majority of my high-school career to community service, I realize that by pursuing architecture, I can make the most positive impact on society.…

In considering which path to take in graduate school, I immediately had a flashback to when I would travel with my mother and care for my younger siblings while she worked as a counselor to provide assistance with psychosocial support and mental health care to communities, families and individuals in conflict and post-conflict situations. Having the opportunity to observe her and the organization change so many people’s lives while providing them with hope, planted the seed of nurturing and counseling in my heart. Since middle school I have devoted my time to taking on every opportunity that comes my way to volunteer with helping my community better the lives of our youths.…

As my son was finishing up his PreK program the teachers announced their retirement. I quickly knew this was my opportunity to live out my dream of being a preschool teacher. As part of my CDA requirements I needed to spend time in a classroom so I began volunteering in my daughters PreK class. I enjoyed being encouraged to be creative and playful in daily activities and have a substantial input in the classroom curriculum and schedule. I really liked using games, storytelling, and other activities to help children develop language and vocabulary, improve social skills, and learn basic science and math concepts. The highlights of my days volunteering was when I saw a child’s eyes light up when they learn/try something new. When they suddenly were able to make the letters in their name, or do something they weren’t previously able to do, I got as excited as they did. When the children were lined up waiting to come into class, and then run in and give me a hug, it warmed my…

In summer of 2011 I made a decision that would change my life to move from Southern California to Atlanta, Georgia. I was laid off, bored, and wanting a change in my life and with the support of my family and friends I made the move by myself. The first few months down there were a culture shock; I had no friends and no job. One I received a phone call to work for a nonprofit organization called “The Center for Family Resource.” From November 2011 to October 2012 I got a crash course lesson into what the human service field was about. Assisting families with children struggling with rent, food, and the transitional housing project the Center for family Resource has been an instrumental part of the community since its inception in 1960. Working for the company made a person like myself who grew up in a middle-class type family very fortunate and blessed from where I came from.…

My professional goal is to become a teacher with hard work and dedication I know I can reach my lifetime goal. For my extra-curricular activities, I have attended the Head Start at Brookhaven Community College where I have volunteered over thirty hours in a semester to get myself prepared for the profession. Going to the local Head Start gave me the opportunity to see if this is really what I want to do for many years. I put myself in a position where I actually enjoyed what I was doing, I had patience which a lot of people don’t have to teach younger kids. I worked with three to five years old, I had to show them I was the leader. In my four years of High School, I have taken my time out to be a leader in my school. I was vice-president freshman…

During this time I am going to be adjusting to my first job as a PTA, so I am not going to get any extra certifications at this time. After I graduated from high school May of 2010, I took some time to think about the career path that I wanted to follow. A couple months after I graduated from high school, I applied for a job at the Early Explorers Head Start in Anamoose, ND. I did not get the job that I applied for but that was okay because the next day I got a call from the School District offering me another job. They offered me the job of the assistant substitute teacher in the Early Explorers classroom. I accepted the job offer and started working in September of 2010. I loved the job so much. There was also something special in the job for me, my baby brother was also in that class.
