Personal Statement: My Studies And Practice Of Audiology
Personal statement
While we take our hearing ability for granted, others would love to be able to have it and hear the sound of the world. This sums up what I have learned during my studies and practice of audiology. Being an audiologist entails the involvement in various emotional situations, from telling devastated parents that their child is diagnosed with hearing loss to seeing the beautiful reaction of clients hearing for the very first time. Those moments, in fact, made me realize that my passion lies in helping people and making a difference in their lives.

Throughout the past few years I have taken part in many projects and activities to foster education and global engagement. The most recent is my upcoming outreach trip to the Agnes Zabali Boys and Girls Club. This trip was planned by myself, 3 other education students and our faculty supervisor. The purpose of this trip is to provide support for the Agnes Zabali Boys and Girls Club (AZBGC). As Education students, we are taking this opportunity to provide daily lessons for the children who visit the Boys and Girls Club. We started the planning in September and we have put in over 120 hours since then in order to make this trip as beneficial for the children at the AZBGC. Apart of this planning, we have raised funds to help support the children's’ education costs. While planning for this outreach trip, I decided to partner with a local grade seven class to teach them about social justice. Their classroom teacher told me that with the recent media attention in the USA she is having difficulty teaching her students about justice and discrimination. We decided to partner together to teach both the Ugandan Children as well as the Canadian grade seven class about what it is like to live in a different part of the world. This partnership will entail writing letters to each other as well as creating a video about life in each of their respective locations.…

It is an intellectually motivating career being a Speech-Language Pathologist regardless of which of the path one may choose educational or medical. Speech-language pathology allows you to apply your knowledge to benefit others and most importantly to me, however, it feels good helping clients to overcome communication difficulties. It is hard to believe that I have spent the last ten years working as a speech therapist, and it is harder to conceive that it continues to be an exciting field for me despite the many challenges. Gaining admission into the Master's program at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley for Speech-Language Pathology is an essential component in fulfilling my dream. As I persist to submerge myself in the field, I am more avid about gaining the knowledge and expertise to create a better quality of life for individuals with communication impairments.…

Being able to make a difference in a person’s life is something that I have strived to dostarting at a very young age. The profession of speech-language pathology would allow me to do that on a daily basis. My journey dates back to high school when I first saw a speech-language pathologist helping a child with autism who was also non-verbal work with his AAC device. I suddenly realized the importance of speech and the role it plays in a person’s life. Seeing his eyeslight up after he was able to communicate his wants with his peers, motivated me to want to become a speech-language pathologist. In 2014 I began teaching at Patrick Henry Elementary School in Martinsville, Virginia. It was my second year of teaching and I was eager, “prepared,” and confident. I learned quickly that this was unlike any school in which I had ever taught. Patrick Henry is a predominantly economically disadvantaged school which means, I was not as prepared as I thought. My first year at Patrick Henry was challenging and there were many bumps in the road but, I learned how to navigate them quickly. Teaching at Patrick Henry has been one of the most rewarding things I have done it my life. By obtaining my Maters in Curriculum and Instruction I hope to give back to a school community that I have learned so much from.…

I always strived to do the best that I can, in everything that I do, and this especially applies to academics. In 6th grade, I joined the honors program at my middle school; from then on forward, I made sure than my work was of high enough quality so that the following year I would be placed in honors courses. These courses are what I believe prepared me for my success in high school. I got a taste of what it was like to be in an environment where every pupil was hungry for an education and for knowledge, and I grew to want to learn as much as my classmates. I entered high school with courses that upperclassmen had that challenged me more than anything else had before. It was during my freshman year of high school that I realized that I couldn’t…
