Personal Narrative: The Old Boat Engine
Waves splashed against the boat, a steady stream of water shot out of the engine, the smell of exhaust created a thin fog on the water. The engine’s forty year slumber had come to an end. With the ferocity of a rudely awakened grizzly the engine propelled the boat through the glassy, cold water. My weeks of effort had finally paid off. The sixty year old boat engine was alive! My resurrection of the old boat motor started in the waning days of summer. School was starting up and I was looking for some productive way to spend my time after school. I had always known that various old boat motors were down there but I assumed all were weak and would only propel a boat at a dismal pace. This time however, something caught my eye! It was an eighteen horsepower 1957 Evinrude fastwin. I never knew an engine this powerful was in our basement! Like frankenstein's monster I was going to breath life back into this old engine! …show more content…
The old engine would require all rubber parts replaced and it’s entire electrical system inspected and tested. I would also have to rebuild a old gas tank that used the self pressurizing system that the old engine required. This list of thing to do didn’t even include rebuilding the boat motor’s carburetor and replacing the spark plugs! I had a lot to do! The start of my repairs was getting new spark plugs for the engine. I did this to check on the status of the ignition system. If I could get a good spark from the spark plugs then I would know the ignition coils and condensers were still good. I put on the new spark plugs and had my dad hold them on the side of the engine to check the spark. I gave it the engine one good pull and to my surprise, a brilliant white spark appeared on the spark plug! This flash of light filled me with encouragement. I was determined to get this engine

In the short story “The Boat” Alistair MacLeod writes a story that predominately deals with the power of the past over the present. She uses symbols such as the boat which eventually transforms into books. From the father’s strong perspective, the boat symbolizes the means of survival for his family and imprisonment whereas, from the father and daughters point of view the books, which replace the boat symbolizes liberation and escape from the traditions of fishing. The main symbol in “The Boat” is the boat itself. The family thought the boat as their means of survival and that without the boat they would not have a house at the harbor, nice food and clothes to wear. Meanwhile, in the fathers perspective the boat is an ever-lasting trap that without it is impossible to sustain life and with it life is an…

The narrative, The Driver’s Seat struck home for me because I just received my driver’s license this past May, 2015. I took time for me to actually drive and to become comfortable behind the wheel of a car. This piece of writing spoke to me and allowed me to review some of the identical thinking points that I went through while getting to the point of taking control of my dad’s car. The story effectively walked me through the trials of spirit and mental anguish that preceded me in taking hold of the vehicle with my dad as the co-pilot giving directions. This was the exact thing the driving instructor in The Driver’s Seat‘ taught the author. The routine of how to maneuver and throw caution to the wind- taking risks- to get the author over…

Today is the day we are starting our trip. We have our wagon train ready to go now it's time to leave this crazy city. I have my oxen pulling my prairie schooner everything is going well until I bump into a fancy Conestoga wagon. The wagon wasn't to badly damaged, there was just a scratch, but the owner made me pay him sixty dollars. I almost knocked him out but I didn't want to start off our journey that way. Our first day we had plenty of problems including the little accident earlier we had to dump some of the tools we doubled up on because of an over load issue. I was mad as the dickens because I was looking forward to using those tools. They costed us a pretty penny as well. We made camp after 25 miles for the day. We made a horse shoe…

    Descriptive Essay On Ice

    • 3 Pages

North of Alaska, ripples scattered over the water as the small 'u' shaped trawler glided through the shivering water. As Summer swept through, the mountains with the remains of snow enclosed the lake, distant from the open sea. A small gulley was the only way to access the unknown feverish water. A thin layer of ice sat clumsily on the cool liquid. As the humble boat pierced through the slender layer of ice, it parted with ease leaving a slushy mix on the surface. Calmly, the middle aged man walked to the bow lowering the now ancient anchor. As ancient as the anchor so was the boat. White paint peeled from the side and hull, the raw timber now exposed. As the man walked across the decaying boards they screamed in protest. The man, Tim Kolveski,…

Stephen Cran’s the Open Boat displays the Archetypal theme of light and darkness. The story chronicles the journey of five men as they are stranded at sea in a small boat. The men experience both physical and mental anguish as they drift aimlessly in a vast body of water. The vast expanse of the ocean helps the reader relate to the characters and their effort to rectify their situation. Their efforts at time seem futile at times. The harsh reality of their situation is evident. In the beginning of the story fear strikes the men like a wave striking their boat. The men then become consumed with fear, anger and confusion. The men attempt to justify why they are in the situation. They soon come to realize that there is no explanation or…

Automotive Builders, Inc. (ABI) is a company that consistently changed its production lines and strategic goals relative to the needs of the times, starting out producing diesel engine parts for tractors in the 1940’s, switching over to the production of parts for military vehicles during World War II, and then, after the war, settling into its current placement in both the automobile and tractor industry. Due to the downturn in the economy and stiff and superior competition in both quality and price rising up from the Japanese who had recently entered into the industry, ABI is trying to find productive and innovative ways to improve sales and guarantee placement as the number one company in its market. The preferred modification addressed in the proposal would be to add new pistons to the 6-cylinder engines making the engines more powerful. The company recently changed its strategic goals and management is using these goals to help guide the decisions being made within the company. ABI corporate employee, Jim Wickes, reviews the details of the proposal of the Stanhope project, weighing the benefits and risks of the company taking it on before presenting it to the executive vice president of the company for final decision on whether or not to implement it.…

One of the most significant challenges I have faced was when I injured my knee during a critical time of my dragon boat career. However, I powered through paddling through the salty waters of Marine Stadium at the annual Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival with a knee brace, high adrenaline , grunts, and shouts; it was the last time I ever paddled after placing 4th in A division with my precious members. Afterward, I knew my knee would only get worse if I kept on paddling, so I was extremely dejected in having to stop doing a sport that I enjoyed. Even though I was saddened to stop paddling for my health and future, I continued on with the dragon boat team by being a manager, secretary, and a volunteer organizer.…

At the beginning of the 20th century, two types of engines were common: bladed turbines, driven by either moving water or steam generated from heated water, and piston engines, driven by gases produced during the combustion of gasoline. The former is a type of rotary engine, the latter a type of reciprocating engine. Both types of engines were complicated machines that were difficult and time-consuming to build.…
