One of the main requirements is that you have to be 18 years of age. You have to have a high school degree or GED certificate of equivalence. So you have to have graduated high school and have your high school diploma, you must have fulfilled all the requirements for high school. You must also be in good physical shape for this job, as a requirements for this job. For example, you must be able to complete activities such as lift a tire off the machine, or take bolts off of the oil pan. You must be able to complete one of the most important things, and that is undergo a training course. Some heavy equipment operators begin right out of high school while others attend technical school and do apprenticeships. Technical school training can take anywhere from 12 to 24 months but an apprenticeship may last up to 4 years but offers more training. While attending technical school classroom work may include things such as safety and maintenance you will learn many responsibilities that a heavy machinery operator must complete. If you choose to do an apprenticeship, on the job training is supervised by a licensed operator and usually starts on the simpler equipment such as bulldozers and fork lifts. Training can only be completed during the summer due to the need for thawed ground. Being a heavy equipment operator takes a lot of training and patience, it is not an easy thing to do but it is easy to pass if you pay attention.
