Personal Narrative: My Military Life
Hi Amber, great to "see" you in another class! Thank you and your family for the years of service. The military life has its own culture, but as you have mentioned the frequent moves allow you to experience numerous geographical locations and their cultures. My grandparents immigrated through Ellis Island from Scotland and I have been fortunate to visit where they lived several times.

Soldiers everywhere do this every day not knowing if they are going home ever to see their loved ones. They do this because they are selfless and are heroes. That’s why an American I believe in is made possible by the sacrifices of our military.…

Have you ever been in the position of leaving your entire family behind? Well, I have an opportunity to make that choice this coming summer. I have a choice between staying here in the United States and playing baseball for an American Legion Team, The Outlaws, or leaving the US and playing for an Ambassador Baseball Team in the Dominican Republic. This decision is tough considering no one in my family can come along. Also in the sixteen years of my life, I have never been away from my family for an extended amount of time. Mainly, I feel there are three big factors in my decision. These factors are meeting new people with a different background, learning a new language and adapting to a new culture.…

The bloody plane was shot down…I was sleeping dreaming about a concoction of fish and chips and my home before the war. I lived on a farm, and I had my own horse…I miss him. My dad taught me how to ride when I was four; riding would provide me relief from school and farming. Anyways, I then I awoke to a storm of fire. The plane was literally sliced in two. I think the beastly enemy shot us down. Even though they shot us clean out of the sky, I wish to thank them and show some British manners to them because this island is beautiful. It has fruit, and the sights are more beautiful than anything back home. There are even pigs on the island that we could eat. Sadly, I thought myself alone until a booming noise thundered through the jungle. I was scared; I thought it was an earthquake, although I have never experienced one before.…

When you are someone’s support system you take on multiple roles that indirectly deteriorate your self preservation. Being a listener or a shoulder to cry on, requires sacrifices that, in the moment, you do not even recognize as imposing. Voluntarily and willingly being there for someone begins with the unwavering doubt that you and your own problems cannot and will not prevail over your person’s immediate crisis. Depending on the duration of your duty, a somewhat selfish thought of inconvenience is bound to surface. But, that wave of retraction is almost always combatted by a riptide of dedication and loyalty that brings you back to sea, where all you can do is tread. In turn, the suppression of self regarding issues regularly comes with a layer of obligation and a sting of bitterness.…

“You are order to active duty as a member of your reserve component unit for the period indicated unless sooner released or unless extended. Proceed from your current location in sufficient time to report by the date specified. You enter active duty upon reporting to unit home station”. These were the words telling me that I was going to Iraq, to fight and destroy the enemies of the United States of America and face one of my biggest challenges yet. Soon after I received my orders in the mail I had a dilemma, what’s going to happen when I tell my mother and the rest of my family? Have I been taking my family and friends for granted, now that I have this situation in front of me I realize that maybe I should have tried…

Upon finishing my first cup of coffee, my son pulls in the driveway and enters the house with the words, "MOM I NEED TO TELL YOU SOMETHING." With heart wrenching thoughts, I sat back in my chair to prepare myself. Never once thinking of the rumors, which had orders coming to activate and deploy the 39TH Infantry Brigade, of the Arkansas National guard, for a 2ND tour of duty in Iraq. I guess I had just blocked this out especially since; My American Soldier's enlisted time would be up October 1, 2008. As he took a deep breath, I could not believe my ears. He said, "We've received Title 10 orders (Federal Activation & Deployment) as of October 1, 2008, and before you say anything I've re-enlisted for another 6-year term." Upon these words, I totally fell apart and I mean literally. The tears flowed with no…

This week as I teach a friend with my husband about the war chapters and what we can learn from them was very interesting. Having a religious conversation him is always fun and I learn so much from him. Some of the question that I asked him is what can we learn from the war chapters? One of the biggest thing that we learned about the war chapters, is the power of the woman and the thing that are taught. My husband reminded me about his mother, and how she really taught him about the sprit and how to use it and made him the man that he is. We all can learn something from the women in are lives if we are will to obey and listen to what they are teaching use. We also need to always remember that we are in war and need to teach are children from right and wrong. We talk about this and as right now it is a spiritual war against the world.…

I had my worst vacation in Vietnam in 1985. I stayed in Hanoi, in the northern part (of Vietnam). I have an older friend who served in the USMC from 1960 to 1976 and was captured and held by NVA from 1969 to 1975, and he was with me. He had these flashbacks all the time and I couldn’t stand it. The first morning he went nuts and we had to take the next flight back to US. He tried to assault a local who had a hairstyle that almost all of NVA used. I stopped him before the local was incapacitated.…

It was about seven in the evening and I got a call from my friend, letting me know she and her grandmother had made it home. Her grandmother is in her 60’s, so there wasn’t much texting going between us. I’d been trying to catch up with her all day to interview her, but I guess she had a very busy weekend. I finally arrived to the house just ready to get the interview over with.…

A lot of people were out and about, taking advantage of the weather after a cold spring. The weather had just began to turn around and today was the warmest it has been all year. It was also a perfect day for opportunity.…
