Personal Narrative: The Illinois Tornados All-Star Football Team
“Alright listen, we may not have won and we may not have been the best team out there today, but I’ll be damned if we didn’t play our hearts out every last minute of that game,” our captain said. “That’s all Day would have asked for and I say we did that pretty damn well.” Over the summer of 2015 I played for the Illinois Tornados All-Star rugby team and my team and I had gone through quite the rough patch in the Pittsburgh Regional All-Star Tournament when we tied one game and lost five. The expressions on the faces of my teammates were distressed and utterly disgusted by the performance we had put on. Coach Day was the head coach at the time and was on the verge of shedding tears; not because we had lost or because he was leaving for retirement, …show more content…
We had made it clear to each other that he would not go unavenged. We had enough passion to fight the world if we felt absolutely necessary and we went on through what seemed like a war that weekend. Through blood, sweat, and injury, we battled for that title. The championship match came in our grasps and tensions were high for the entire game since we didn't only want to win for us, but for our coach who had recently resigned. After a game full of devastating hits and elaborate set plays, we lost after an undefeated run of 5-0-0, but we fought to the death and left it all out on the field. No regret in our heads would ever go opposite the way we played in that title match because Coach Day had educated us all that no matter how exceptionally skilled at something you believe you are, you will never progress without putting your entire willpower to the task. Without passion, you fight for nothing. Passion is what will drive you through every hill and valley of your life. From that day onward, all I have done has been for a reason and I have strong-armed my way through thick and thin to be successful in my life and I plan to extend this through my entire college career and lifetime. I will at no time give up on what I believe is crucial, similar to being successful in that tournament for my

    Varsity Team Summary

Coach P focused on individual team member physical strength as the greatest factor in making team selections at the beginning of the training season. One of the things that he should have done differently was to devise a method to observe the psychological attributes of the team, to determine which team members were likely to work well together. As a coach he should have attacked the new problems he observed without delay. He could have debriefed the Varsity team after each loss, while taking input from each team member, for example the meeting that was held closer to the national championships should have been earlier in the season, and scheduled periodically. Coach P should have found the most appropriate means to motivate the Varsity team after the first couple of losses. One of the two following methods of motivation could have been used. The first, the Goal-Setting Method, would have told the team exactly what needed to be accomplished in order to improve their…

The team would always get there an hour early so we could stretch and hit in the cage. We were noticeably the best team in the tournament. The coach of the team was a smart guy, he wanted to win but he didn’t want to embarrass anybody. This game didn’t really mean anything, and not to mention we were playing the worst team there.…

Quite possibly the most significant time of my life was during my senior year as part of the Edison High School football team. The story of our 2006 season is a reflection of my life and testimony to my beliefs and values. Underdogs from day one, we represented not only our school, but also our community and families. Early expectations of the 2006 Eagles were low and the surrounding community was under the belief that Edison would be lucky to go 6-4 with the inexperienced players and the loss of such a talented senior class. Suddenly, I was starting as the outside linebacker/defensive end for the first time in my career along with 18 brand new starters. Unexpectedly, a green group of replacements were 5-0, half-way through our season. After…

Our second game was against the former coach for UNA, Jason Anderson. Coach Anderson was the original coach who offered me a scholarship to UNA. The tension was high, due to familiar faces. We ended up having to play them twice and we beat them both times. After winning all four games we reached the Championship series. Humbolt, from New York, was our biggest obstacle we had to face. The team with the best two out of three wins was to be named the National Champs. The first game we played, we lost to Humbolt. The loss hit us hard and our spirits were down. All season we had not faced a pitcher that shut us down completely. Walking to the locker room after that loss, felt as if we had already became runner up in the Championship series. Beating Humbolt twice the next day, seemed to be an impossible task. We sat in silence as tears ran down our faces. Our coaches let us cry and let us get our emotions out. She knew the pressure we felt and the adversity that was staring us in the face. After 30 minutes of silence, one of the players brought up the games we had to play against UAH. Another player mentioned the victory against Valdosta, and we were instantly reminded that we were capable of anything. We knew that all of the hard work we had put in was not going to waste. We were not going to settle for anything else but a National…

When I stood at the bottom I did not think I could make it. half way up, I knew that I could not make it. Now, standing at the top, I look behind me at the amazing challenge that I have just conquered. Not only is the hill at Eau Claire an infamous feat that every student must traverse, but it is also a metaphor for every hardship that has entered into my life. One hardship I have faced, was my sports injuries during high school. My junior year track season started off being the best experience i’ve had. Unfortunately, this time was cut short. I ripped a ligament in my leg ending my entire spring season. I was angry at the world asking, “why me”. However, I knew I still had a team depending on me. Day in, and day out, I would show up to practice…

For nine months out of the year, twelve hours a week, my main focus in life was photography. At school, the main photojournalist for the yearbook is me. Yearbook is basically an editorial for schools. In order for the team to create a successful product, we must communicate and work together. My yearbook team taught me the importance of time management and cooperation in order to do our jobs. The yearbook communities of schools must be diligent in order for a functional team and a successful book. The dictionary definition of a community is “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals”, and I feel that the yearbook team is my community.…

Basketball is probably my favorite sport to be in. This is not because of the actual game as much as being part of a team so close, we were almost like brothers. I had originally joined basketball in 6th grade to make friends and have fun. That is what it was like during that grade. When 7th grade rolled along, the 7th and 8th grade is one team and we would go to each other's games, things started to get serious. We loved our coach, he pushed us hard to be good players but at the end of the day, we were like a big family. We were a Lutheran school but we were good. We had won a lot of state and national tournaments, in the private school division, in the past but we were not cocky about it. That year has been a particularly tough season. We had conflict and a few of our players, our friends, left. Our coach, Coach Ulrich had broken one of the discs in his back and can’t move around very well. Right before state, one of our best players, Greg, sprained his ankle and can not play as well and needs a lot of bench time. Our rival team played a dirty trick and ended up winning the very close semifinals in state. Nationals has been harder than normal, we lost to a good team right off the bat, who we might have been able to beat otherwise, and we were put into the ladder which is always harder. Here we are in the…

Back in my sophomore year of high school, my baseball team was on the path of a successful season. Our team was very close; we treated each other like family, until one day, tragedy struck. One afternoon, before practice, the entire team walked into the locker room as our coach told us the news. The older brother of one of the senior players had been drinking and driving and killed the cousin of another player who was in my grade. The driver, his brother, was so drunk, he didn’t even know he hit someone. Nobody knew what to say; we all seemed lost. We didn’t see both of those players for a couple of weeks. The senior player was basically the leader of the team. Suddenly the players started forming into groups, defending either player. We didn’t feel like a family anymore. We ended up finishing the season with a demoralizing record of 6-24, the worst season I experienced throughout the four years I was there.…
