Personal Narrative: The Blue Ridge Mountains

The Blue Ridge Mountains are not to be forgotten. Sometimes folks from the other side of the Mississippi tend to overlook one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the country. Yes, I agree that there is plenty to keep you busy out west, but there is so much more than the Rocky Mountains -and that's saying something.

Spring is in full bloom here at Humpback Hollow, and there's even more to come before the summer months are in full swing. Spring showers are doing their part as the perennial caterers of the new energy and nutrition that feeds the blooms and lights up the trees. In between the showers, the sky is electric blue. I've been fortunate to have traveled all over the world, but for the past several years I keep finding new places right here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Two of my favorite mountain towns are McCaysville and Blue Ridge. Both are old as the hills and have quaint, but big personalities. I can kick back and relax or I can get on the river and fish or boat or just rubberneck. The hills are filled with lush hiking trails for the enthusiast as well as the stroller. It's all good. These two gems are located in Georgia and in Tennessee on the North Carolina – Tennessee line. You can literally have one foot in each state. You are getting the best of all three
At its heart was the train depot and a popular spot for visitors then and now to stop and have a nice meal then walk down Main Street to the mineral springs.

McCaysville is quaint and shares the area with its twin sister Copperhill, Tennessee. Both brimming with laid back attitudes, good restaurants, shops for gizmos and shops for the ardent antiquer. No formal wear permitted on this vacation. Even if there's an auspicious occasion, casual is the rule of the day. My family and I like to rent a houseboat and fish our way down the Toccoa River to Georgia, where after building a campfire on shore, spend the night and just absorb the quiet. It's mystical with the night sky filled with billions of stars and the hooting of owls. The next day we wake up to a freshness that shoots you right back to childhood when everything seemed simpler and uncluttered. It's the perfect way to start a day.
