Personal Narrative: The Blue Ridge Mountains
The Blue Ridge Mountains are not to be forgotten. Sometimes folks from the other side of the Mississippi tend to overlook one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the country. Yes, I agree that there is plenty to keep you busy out west, but there is so much more than the Rocky Mountains -and that's saying something.

Spring is in full bloom here at Humpback Hollow, and there's even more to come before the summer months are in full swing. Spring showers are doing their part as the perennial caterers of the new energy and nutrition that feeds the blooms and lights up the trees. In between the showers, the sky is electric blue. The color alone calls the nature lover out from under the sleepy blanket of last month's snow. Crisp, fresh

I've been fortunate to have traveled all over the world, but for the past several years I keep finding new places right here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Two of my favorite mountain towns are McCaysville and Blue Ridge. Both are old as the hills and have quaint, but big personalities. I can kick back and relax or I can get on the river and fish or boat or just rubberneck. The hills are filled with lush hiking trails for the enthusiast as well as the stroller. It's all good. These two gems are located in Georgia and in Tennessee on the North Carolina – Tennessee line. You can literally have one foot in each state. You are getting the best of all three …show more content…
At its heart was the train depot and a popular spot for visitors then and now to stop and have a nice meal then walk down Main Street to the mineral springs.

McCaysville is quaint and shares the area with its twin sister Copperhill, Tennessee. Both brimming with laid back attitudes, good restaurants, shops for gizmos and shops for the ardent antiquer. No formal wear permitted on this vacation. Even if there's an auspicious occasion, casual is the rule of the day. My family and I like to rent a houseboat and fish our way down the Toccoa River to Georgia, where after building a campfire on shore, spend the night and just absorb the quiet. It's mystical with the night sky filled with billions of stars and the hooting of owls. The next day we wake up to a freshness that shoots you right back to childhood when everything seemed simpler and uncluttered. It's the perfect way to start a day.

The Appalachians are a chain of mountains that run from eastern Newfoundland, Canada to Alabama, US. They are the result of three major orogenic events that divide, by means of major thrust faults, into separate provenances: the Valley and Ridge province, the Blue Ridge province, and the Piedmont, from West to East respectively. Each provenance formed at a different time and is comprised of regionally distinct lithologies (Chernicoff, 1995).…

In Albert Bierstadt’s painting The Rocky Mountains, the artist takes on two roles. He was creating a record of the culture of that time and also helping viewers to see the world in a different way. For someone who had never seen the Rocky Mountains, but may have heard of their beauty, they could now have a different view of the mountains through Bierstadt’s work. Bierstadt also accurately records, in this artwork, Native-American dress and living conditions (Syre, 2010). As someone who has never seen the Rocky Mountains, I now have a new outlook and deeper appreciation of the area just by viewing this relatively small work of art.…

The owner replied, ‘The mountains are high, and the Emperor lives far away.’” The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has delineated Appalachia to include thirteen states and more than four hundred counties (Turner 11). The environment is well recognized as containing the most biologically diverse mountain systems on the continent. The diversity of this regional span in terms of its geography, ecology, ethnicities, and cultures and their interactions with each other is difficult to grasp. Reflections of their environment and “despite a popular opinion to the contrary, Appalachia is as extraordinarily heterogeneous economically, socially, and culturally as it is ecologically” (Hay 9). Burkhard Bilger of the New Yorker called the Appalachians, “a kind of cultural Galapagos.” At the very least, finally someone is noticing the multiplicity of this extensive domain. It would seem that most of the “Emperor’s kingdom,” the outsiders, have not been able to scale the mountain wall surrounding Appalachia to see what is really like…

What makes Appalachian Americans unique? Starting with characteristics one that most Appalachian’s share is an intense desire for freedom. “Freedom to live as they pleased, with lots of space to themselves– “elbow room”, as Appalachian Daniel Boone used to say. People who settled Appalachia were not inclined to be bound to institutions, religious or otherwise. Those ties and that external authority were part of what they wanted to leave behind. These people brought their traditions, values and beliefs with them. They came into contact with Native Americans, and while doubtless there were fights for land, the settlers and Indians reached an understanding” (How do you know if you're appalachian).…
