Personal Narrative: Shuster House
Mike,

Thanks. Looking good as always.

I ran into Bob Livingston at a Tulane event last week and he told me about a
Shuster House T&I event the week before, where the great Bud Shuster appeared. It sounded like a large event, but maybe not.

Was this something we should have been plugged into and how do we find out about such things, if attendance would be appropriate and even necessary, given our stature as a firm in the T&I arena?

Greg was trained to survive on the streets as well as in jail. He became vicious and hunted weak prey by dawning a ski mask and robbing drug spots armed with a shotgun. He would bark orders, knocking heads and collect all the valuables. His drug addiction called for this and he followed, faithfully. His brother Dan convinced him to enter a 90-day program in the heart of skid row in downtown LA. In the first 30-days of his stay in the program he walked the streets while out on a “pass” and saw many people I knew and have known. His skid row life-changing experience taught, and he learned. Greg began to slow down and started becoming more “regular” doing more “normal” things with a new circle of people also in recovery. He soon got married…

Driving down the street we don’t always pay attention to signs, buildings, or street names. I do it every day. On my way to school and work there are dozens of businesses and signs that are just blurs in the corner of my eye. One business that I have always noticed was the furniture store, H3 Home + Decor, off of Harkrider Street. Every time I drive by I see the larger than life billboard on the side of the building. The billboard is a bright green living room set that attracts the eye of nearly everyone driving by.…

I was a camp counselor at Camp Wabikon ‒ a co-ed overnight summer camp located in Temagami, Ontario for children who are 6-15 years of age. Along with teaching Red Cross swimming and lifesaving and Tennis, I was my cabin's 'parent' for six weeks. Therefore, I was present with the children at all times. In essence, I was the leader of my cabin's the physical, social and mental development. The main things I learned were the importance of time management and organization , as I had to plan lessons for swimming and Tennis while taking care of my cabin; conflict resolution between campers; and the ability to plan and foresee events (I had to plan camp-wide events and activities for all campers).…

I stood on the patio, for some reason almost expecting for the door to magically open for me. I shook my head, chuckling at myself. I really had been spending too much time in the wizard world. Sherlock's house more or less looked the same to me. There were only slight adjustments here or there, a small chipped roof tile, a new paint job on one of the sides of the houses, some new bushes in the yard. Other than that, though, it was inherently the same house I had seen when I was a third-grader. It was as if stepping back into a portal into my childhood. At the same time, though it wasn't like that either. The house just seemed so much inherently smaller than I remembered, and a lot colder too. Perhaps though that was because I had grown up…

Throughout my life, I have faced a number of crucibles but one, in particular, is more prominent than the rest. About five years ago, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, a traumatic experience that affected my entire family. Each member of my immediate family chose to deal with the news in different ways, however, I am the only one that elected to live in denial. Sadly, the only way I knew how to cope with such devastating news was to continue living my life as if nothing was happening. Denial is simply unsustainable as you cannot escape the memories that the crucible has formed. Nevertheless, years after my mom was originally diagnosed I began to appreciate the experience for what it was rather than shy away from it; developing hardiness.…

My family environment has influenced me a lot especially when my siblings were born. I am the oldest out of five, so I'm always look up to. I always had to make a good example and never show that I was scared. When my mom and stepdad had to work, I would take care of them until they came back while getting my schoolwork and practicing my instrument done too. I never really had a chance to be a kid, I always had to be a mother to my siblings. I would always wish for more time in the day for myself, Although watching them grow up from when they were small and started school for the first time made up for that loss time. I live up to a quote, "Be the master of your future, not the slave of your problems." My senior year I had to stop being…

I come from a world where the only thing that is constant, is change. Changing states, changing houses, and changing schools. Unlike most other kids, I don't have a childhood home where I made countless memories, in fact, my earliest memories as a child all consist of cardboard moving boxes, along with unimaginably long car rides to foreign places. I don’t have a door marked to show how I've grown over the years, and I don't have a bedroom wall thick with paint covering over colors I chose as a child. Truthfully, often times when I was younger, and would see someone with these things, I was tempted to be envious and couldn't help but to think how lucky they were to have such stability. As a result of this, I spent a large portion of my childhood…

I remember when they kicked us out. It was only a couple of weeks ago. We Indians were minding our own business when the troops first came. They dragged us out of our tents and sent us walking with only the clothes on our back. My family decided to go to the Oklahoma region along with our tribe. And so here we are, walking through forests, woods, and plains on The Trail of Tears, looking for our destination. We have been walking since, and our clothing can do nothing against the harsh rain, snow, and coldness.…
