Personal Narrative: My Pediatric Experience
I acquired some pediatric experience through volunteering at Shriners Hospitals for Children and working at the ASI Children's Center on Sacramento State campus. I have been volunteering, specifically for the Therapeutic/Childlife Department, for almost 2 years. This volunteer position has given me an opportunity to provide an environment that is clean and friendly for the patients and their families. I also assist my supervisors in making sure that the patients who are not with a family member to be safe and entertained. In addition, I also participate in a few bed-side plays with patients who are unable to come down.

My pediatric experience is enhanced when I worked at the ASI Children's Center. My position was the Student Assistant I.

Paxton my nephew was having surgery today on his ears at proctor. he had to get this surgery since he has had many ear infections and he was only one. they got him all set up by checking vitals, blood pressure, weight, height, and many other things to get ready for surgery. after they got him all set up they said we needed to go into the waiting room so they could get started. we gave hugs, kisses and headed out to the waiting room. This surgery lasted about a half an hour, but it felt like forever. While he was in surgery my heart was racing, my head was pounding, and my palms were sticky and sweaty. In this short time I have owned my own private practice with two other partners, I have worked as an associate dentist for a company in private practice, provided treatment to thousands of American soldiers and hundreds of foreign soldiers and local nationals in Afghanistan. The most rewarding time in my career thus far was being a lead managing doctor in a general dentistry practice focusing on treatment for children in underserved areas. I was also lucky enough to practice under a great pediatric dentist which increased my interest for pediatrics. While I have enjoyed every aspect of dentistry that I have had the opportunity to experience, the time I have spent working with children gives me the most joy. Things like having a scared five year old give you a hug after the treatment and tell you that she is not scared anymore are so rewarding. So when I made the discussion to apply to the Pediatric Residency Program it was like I had found a shoe with the perfect comfortable…

It was similar to working the adult med/surg unit, but it everything was done much slower. Each child was approached only when they were comfortable with the nurse and what was going to be done. I learned the importance of gaining a child’s understanding and cooperation prior to doing anything with them has a better outcome for everyone. I learned that family is a true part of the care team. I learned that children can be very forgiving of the pain that is caused during medical procedures if they have a safe place to go afterwards.…

Since the start of my clinical experience, I have found something to love in every specialty of medicine. Whether it is the cynical nature of surgeons or the broad based knowledge of internists, I wanted to be a part of it all. My favorite part of each specialty was the interaction and relationship I was able to form with every patient. However, I always found myself gravitating towards the pediatric population, particularly the adolescents. Whenever I saw a pediatric patient during my clerkships, I had this inner feeling of exhilaration. That feeling…
