Personal Narrative: My Mother's Legacy
Her Legacy I’ve been told the impact of a parent’s passing can carry on for years or forever. I was my mother’s primary care giver for two years. In her last four months, along with hospice, I took care of her full time along with maintaining my full time job. She passed in her home surrounded by me and my other two siblings in January. Just three months later my dad, who was not married to my mom, died unexpectedly in his sleep. I am still in the tender times of grief from my mother’s and father’s deaths. Who would think I could fathom writing about such a sorrowful time in addition to writing about the lessons I learned from my mother’s last months and the graceful way she left this earth. I relive this not only because it is kind of …show more content…
Her grace in all things she did stood out most. I watched as she was thankful to everyone, even swallowing her pride most times. I finally found out that life is not about always having it easy and people weren’t always kind. Her voice comes to me a lot; smile even when it’s hard, be courteous, and when others are petty and mean; remember that is not the person I am. I am still in the process of grief and don’t know if the something is missing will ever go away. Most likely not due to the person she was and how much she taught me. I never thought I would learn something from this trying experience. I do take comfort in knowing that qualities I admired in her, she inadvertently gave them to me. It was these qualities; strength and grace that were contributory to restarting what I started two and half years ago; obtain my Bachelors at Eckerd

When it comes to school, I guess you could say that my mom was a bit of a nerd. She was extremely smart and exceeded in every class. She went to a Catholic school until fourth grade. She said, about this school, “Not much happened here, I was placed in Reading and Math groups by myself, and no, I was never hit with rulers over the knuckles by the nuns, if you were wondering.” In middle school, she was placed in an advanced class and by the time she left she was finished with all her required high school math classes. She was also inducted into the National Junior Honor Society where she held the office of Secretary. Some nights I dream about Michael. He’s coming home from college for christmas break and he’s brought a girl with him. Our family is sitting at the dinner table and he’s giving my sister’s new boyfriend a hard time. My mother’s parents would always share stories with us about how their parents came to America from Italy and Germany. They would bring out old photo albums and tell us all about how different life was for them and how they held on to family cooking recipes and every Christmas we make the same dishes that their parents would make. My father’s parents would also share stories about Ireland and my grandpa would talk about what he experienced when he was in the war. Unlike the family I interviewed, I was brought up in a Christian household. Every Sunday the whole family would attend church together and then go out to eat after to talk about what we had learned. We would also pray every night before bed and were always told to give thanks throughout the day for the life we have been blessed with.…

They were the sweetest, funniest, and most loving people I could ever imagine. They filled the room with smiles and cherished moments. Having two grandmothers whose arms were always opened wide to welcome you with love was a great feeling. Their smile was brighter than the stars that sparkled high above. They listened without judgment and took the time to share. But that was just the beginning.…

What does coming of age mean? Merriam-Webster defines it as "the time when a person becomes an adult," but is there more to the phrase than the dictionary says? I sought to answer that question as I sat down in my sunroom. The room wasn't very interesting. It had a stiff carpeted floor, beige walls, and a couch with a pattern of black and white that smeared together to form quite a dull gray. While I got ready to interview, my siblings were tidying up the often messy room. I was anxiously waiting for mom to come down. My mother was currently upstairs, probably changing or putting on makeup. She knew I had to go somewhere soon, so she was trying to be as fast as possible. Eventually, Mom came down and entered the sunroom. She grabbed…
