It was a chilly day on March 6, 2007. Me and my family were on 495 going to the Holy Cross Hospital with a slight delay of traffic. For some reason, I kept fiddling with my fingers, I was really nervous to see him. We took the exit 31A and we all shifted to the left since it was a sharp turn to the right. My big sister, Maisie, was on my shoulder and we shifted her head fell on my lap. She woke up and asked where we were. “We are almost there Maisie” my Dad said. We stopped at the traffic light and I fiddled with my fingers some more. “Stop fiddling with your fingers!” Maisie whispered to me. In my head, I say “I can’t, he is the first boy of the family, the first! Besides me!” I stopped fiddling and looked at the huge structure in front of me, The Holy Cross Hospital.…

Many things in the world have not been named; and many things, even if they have been named, have never been described. One of these is the sensibility -- unmistakably modern, a variant of sophistication but hardly identical with it -- that goes by the cult name of "Camp."…

One might wonder what a fifteen-year-old was doing standing atop a thirty-yard dumpster, chainsaw in hand, and yelling, "Give me more! It can hold more!" During my ninth grade year I saw an opportunity to complete my Eagle Scout project, helping the Lenape Valley Church remove massive piles of downed pine branches fallen during an early March ice storm, creating an eyesore and complaints from the local community. The project I was tackling was Herculean, and I, compared to now, very inexperienced at leading people. But it is Boy Scout’s duty to give back to his community and I had promised that the enormous piles of branches and snow would be gone before Easter.…

Being able to go to Baltimore with RCC would mean a lot to me. This is my last semester before I graduate and then I will be in school to be a paramedic; so this will be my last opportunity to have one of these once in a lifetime experiences with my classmates. I have made several life long friendships while going on these trips and have been able to see more of the United States then I probably ever would have. From listening to Mr. Martin I have learned how to appreciate art and now I go into a museum and am excited instead of bored. I have been able to stand in places that history was made and see just how much we are not taught but how readily available it is to us if we just look. I have learned invaluable life lessons while on these…

Pow! Right smack in my forehead crushing my skull. The metal baseball bat knocked in my skull. It was a warm sunny day in the middle of the summer. Joey, my brother, was hitting tennis balls over my house. Little 10 year old me was playing in the yard and my brother purposely pushed me far away so he wouldn’t hit me. Oh how I was a stupid little kid. I was intrigued by what he was doing so I started wandering over to like how not knowing little kids do. As I approached my brother he was so focused on himself that he did not see me. When I finally reached him he had just set up to hit another ball. He hits the ball, but on his back rotation, the bat makes contact with my head. I fell hard on the pavement. Before I went unconscious I heard my…

When you are someone’s support system you take on multiple roles that indirectly deteriorate your self preservation. Being a listener or a shoulder to cry on, requires sacrifices that, in the moment, you do not even recognize as imposing. Voluntarily and willingly being there for someone begins with the unwavering doubt that you and your own problems cannot and will not prevail over your person’s immediate crisis. Depending on the duration of your duty, a somewhat selfish thought of inconvenience is bound to surface. But, that wave of retraction is almost always combatted by a riptide of dedication and loyalty that brings you back to sea, where all you can do is tread. In turn, the suppression of self regarding issues regularly comes with a layer of obligation and a sting of bitterness.…

Hospital Internship: Eight hours a week I travel to Catawba Valley Medical Center where I shadow nurses in the oncology unit. Thus far in my internship I have been given a first hand look into the various jobs that make up the oncology department, how medications are administered and what their purposes are, patient care techniques, etc. This internship has not only allowed me to explore my intense interest for the study of oncology but radiology as well seeing as how I am able to rotate between the two units depending on the day. I have also gained an extensive knowledge through observations at the infusion center located downstairs when I travel with patients who are receiving treatment.…

When I had first volunteered at a preparatory school as a teacher’s assistant, I was thrilled and excited. I enjoyed working with children and I admit, was slightly disillusioned with expectations that the children would be dutiful and effortless to watch over. Unfortunately, all my prior imaginations crashed the second I entered the classroom. Everywhere I saw, it was pure chaos. I dodged a flying crayon as I saw children running around throwing paper airplanes, balls, while others just stared at their iPads, focused on the latest game. Not a single one of them even listened to me or glanced at me as I tried to yell over the loud chatter.…

Hundreds of people wearing clothes that looks as if they are striped pajamas, all have some kind of numbers that looks as if it is tattooed on their wrist, and people collapsing from dehydration and starvation. Not a single smile on anyone's face but on these ruthless people that looks as if they are actual soldiers, pointing guns at the people's heads and gunshots going off with a loud thud of the now dead human being. The place looks like it could be a prison but worse and more deadly. There are no buildings unless you count these places that look like cottages but only have bunk beds with no blankets or pillows. Not a single sign of happiness in the environment but, only a sign of death and despair.…
