Personal Narrative: My Experience With Eco-Kids
Eco-kids is an elected group chosen to be responsible for the maintenance and appearance of the school gardens. Involvement with Eco-Kids inspires members to become lifelong environmental stewards through nature and group work. Lessons learned in Eco-Kids also raised my awareness of the environment and helped me understand the actions I can take to improve my local environment and community.
As a member of Eco-Kids I feel it helped me advance my knowledge of environmental issues and how the actions of a community affect the environment. My experience with Eco-Kids helped me relate and understand my role during the Hawk Time

I have grown in this first semester by seeing what there is to the world and learning what there is in the world and what is happening in the world because of the project I had did. My Artifact that I am presenting to you is my Ecology Children’s book project, This project was about a whole variety of topics: from Climate change, pollution, habitat fragmentation, etc. In this project Ms. Ramirez had given our group pollution, we first had to find an article about it and write down some notes for the main part of the project. Then we had to make a brainstorm map and make…

The time went fast as I learned about the preservation of land. I live in Mequon, Wisconsin. For about 15 years I have lived across a vacant acre of land on Mequon road. As the season’s pass by I watched various types of birds fly from the trees and visualize the paw prints in the snow of the fox and other animals that live or pass through. There are also many different species of plants and trees that grow on the vacant land. I sometimes will see neighbors cutting some of the dried plants in fall. And in spring the birds and rabbits are flying and jumping all over. I volunteered for a couple of places this year. The city of Mequon always needs volunteers and many of the senior citizens in the area need help in spring clean up. During the last 6 weeks I have looked at environment science more in-dept and it changed the way I think and look at the land across the street. This class has made me aware of all the different ways that the community and its physical environment work.…

I was granted the opportunity to work with the children and teachers of Coal Pit Learning Center for community engagement week. I worked with the children throughout the week to provide relief to the exhausted teachers and be a person who can look over the children. I was gifted the opportunity to work with a variety of children of ages from 3-5. My first day was tiring, but full of excitement. The children were a mix of shy and excited as we walked into their classroom for the very first time. I thought to myself, as my 3 classmates and I were thrown into the chaos of a group of 3 and 4 year olds, what I should be doing to help. But there was no need for the teachers to explain to us what to do, the children immediately gave us jobs of playing with them or making us watch them race their cars around the room. The week turned out to be a wonderful learning experience for me and the people I worked with.…

Serving the environment was not my first appeal. When I was a little boy, I always wanted to grow up and be a firefighter. I used to watch videos about people who were in trouble. The firefighters would always come to ”save the day”. However, as I grew older I learned it would be a dangerous job. My next inspiration, was from my dad. He is an architect. I was inspired by his drawings and wanted to be just like him. However my mind was never set on anything. When I entered second grade, I learned to be more respectful to the environment. I began to think about brain boggling questions, such as, “what would our world become if we maintained our spread of pollution? These were just thoughtful questions and they didn’t resolve into anything then. Seven years later I was introduced to, MSEL, a charter school at Terra Linda. I knew being part of MSEL would be a great learning experience and I would still get to play high school sports at Terra Linda. Before I completed the application, I had many factors to think about. Three of these factors were, why would I want to join MSEL, what were my expectations for this school, and what were my educational goals when I became enrolled?…

In the atmosphere was where I started. Seventy five years I was there. A carbon atom in a carbon dioxide molecule was what I was. A Pinyon pine tree going through photosynthesis took me from the atmosphere. After I left my home, I converted into a tissue in a Pinyon pine needle. This was only the first part of the cycle, and I was going to the biosphere-plant.…

During my early years in Muskoka I was always encouraged to take a strong interest in the sciences, arts, and the natural world. I not only learned about my environment from living on the “land” but I also spent a substantial part of my life living on a boat on the “water”. Living aboard and sailing on the water, I found, was actually one of the best classrooms I could have experienced. It truly teaches one to see and view all your everyday experiences from a whole different perspective. It taught me the value of being completely self-sufficient, and required me to rely on my own decision making abilities. It also taught me to live with total respect for the living environment and wildlife around me on both a local and global level. I have learned how fragile and threatened our environment has become. I came to realize that our lives are connected, in every way, to all the elements that make up our planet.…

Ever since I can remember, my one driving force has been for animals. I was the girl who was obsessed with helping a hurt or lost animal, and always curious about the creatures I found in my backyard. I have a devoted passion for animals of all shapes and sizes and plan to spend my future saving them and their habitats. I want to help the people of our world understand that animals are not ours to use and abuse for material use, food, and entertainment. First with saving animas comes saving their habitats. For the way we are advancing in the technological and industrial world is not sustainable; due to human activities, we face a world with no fisheries, coral reefs, or rainforests; declining oxygen concentrations, the loss of honey bees,…

The idea of “Green Initiatives” in schools at any age level is a positive step towards installing sustainability in the minds of future generations. To reduce the amount of energy needed, recycle rain water, lessen landfill space and cut the barrels of oil used by Americans daily; can insure that our natural resource will be intact for many years to come. However, obstacles to Green Initiatives are costs, program management and proper data collection. Is it possible to initiate Green Methods in schools and really save cash as a result? It is possible. Let us examine which eco-friendly ideas work for institutions and which do not.…
