Personal Narrative: My Experience As A Student At Northern Virginia Community College
I have been a student at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) for one semester and over the course of my first semester in college, I have learned far more than I have in all my time in high school, In high school I already knew exactly what I career field I was going into and thought that it everything that had to be done in college would be a breeze. I came into college thinking that I would not have any difficulties in any of the classes that I had to take and I would breeze through college like I had done in high school. I was taken back as to the sheer amount of work and hours that needed to be dedicated in my classes in order to be successful. My first semester in college has taught me more about myself than I could have ever learned …show more content…
I very quickly came to the realization after a full week of classes that college would be much harder than I had originally thought. The initial workload was too much for me to handle since I was taking a full load and it was my very first time in college. An example of this was taking my math class (MTH 154) where my professor gave us homework every single class and required at least a bare minimum of four to six hours of studying alongside the note taking that was done in class and out of class. I had gotten lost after the first week on what was due because of the sheer amount of work I had to do, not only for my math class, but my introduction into college (SDV 111), my English class (ENG 111), my History class (HIS 101), and my introduction into technology (ITE 115) where I had to read over chapters and study over notes from the class the night before. Fortunately, this gave me the opportunity to show myself the best ways in which I handle stressful situations and where to turn to get

I began working at Keeter my first semester at College of the Ozarks. On my first day of work, the supervisor handed me a gleaming gold name tag that not only had my name but the state I came from. I watched as others put their nametags on, and I quickly discovered that most of them read Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. I looked down at my nametag and felt a sense of uniqueness, knowing no one in the room had the state of Virginia. I soon began to realize that my nametag sparked curiosity when the guests saw how far I had traveled. Guest after guest would ask the same question, “How did you end up here?” I answered this question dozens of times within a day. There were days that I would begrudgingly tell the Keeter guests my journey to this College, but never once did I fail to cherish the opportunity I was given.…

My time at the community college was used to focus on building a strong academic foundation, specifically tutoring international students English every week as they tried to maneuver through their lives in the United States. I remember during one particular session, a Chinese exchange student told me that when she first arrived in Seattle, she was in a state of euphoria. However, her inability to communicate fluently with her peers hindered her from adapting to the customs in America. Consequently, it impeded her from making her own place in society. Another individual, who emigrated from Eritrea, confessed she was still unfamiliar with having additional resources at her fingertips. She grew up in an area where advanced technological tools,…

It was the morning of move in day. I said goodbye to my home and headed out. I passed the local shopping market and my high school where I enjoyed a fun four years. As I headed to Norman I realized I was leaving everything I had ever known. All my life has consisted of living in the same house, going to school with the same kids, and going to the same supermarkets and restaurants. While I’d like to say I have developed a good idea of the world around me by visiting so many cities around the United States, in reality the only world I’ve ever known is the same one I have spent my whole life in. I have loved growing up in Northwest Oklahoma City with the friends that have helped shaped me into who I am today, however I relished the opportunity…

The Early College was the push I needed to better myself as a student and as a person. In high school, I received stellar grades and test scores without trying. I never needed to study, and I did the bare minimum for a majority of my assignments. Occasionally, I would find an assignment that I loved and go way beyond the requirement. I was a teacher favorite, but I was disliked by other students because I was a bit of a show off with my intelligence. I never needed time management skills, so I never developed them. While I was received good grades, I did not improve any of my skills or abilities. This program helped me find my faults and make changes that have made a world of difference.…
