Personal Narrative: My Early Childhood Education
I grew up in Queens, N.Y. More specifically in a town called College Point. My early childhood education was memorable. I can still recall every one of my elementary school teachers. My fifth grade teacher, Mr. Verrilli, was one of my favorite teachers. He encouraged his students to excel academically. He introduced us to classic literature and challenged us to broaden our horizons. Inspired by my teacher, I stayed up late for an entire week so that I could watch an Italian opera series aired on PBS. Mr. Verrilli taught us a wide variety of subjects, from History to Mathematics, and everything in between. For a Life Science class, Mr. Verrilli arranged to have an incubator and chicken eggs delivered to our classroom. For almost a month, we watched over and turned the eggs like soon-to-be parents. We were able to witness many of the baby chicks being hatched. Mr. Verrilli made learning fun and exciting. He was dedicated to his students and to providing us with a great education.

My high school years were equally memorable. I studied Theater Arts at Hillcrest high school in Jamaica, NY. My dream

Ed. in TESOL at Queens College is two-fold. First, I’m a Queens College alumna and I know without a doubt that Queens College offers a superb education. In undertaking the program I plan to immerse myself in the subject matter and to learn all that I can about TESOL and the art of teaching. Second, after graduating from Queens College I plan to teach in one of the diverse grammar schools located within the NYC area. My goal is to provide children with the necessary skills to become adept speakers, readers and writers of the English language. Moreover, I’d like to follow in the footsteps of all the great teachers who came before me, particularly those that influenced me the most. I’d like to inspire children, not only to learn, but become lovers of learning. And to help them discover their own inner

As most children grow up, they are aware of their surroundings and take in everything they can understand which adds to their personality and their structure of life. As a child I developed at a level more advanced than the children around me. I learned to use a computer at the age of 3 years old. I read at an 8th-9th grade level while in the 5th grade. In addition, I could handle complex situations better than a average elementary student. The mindset I had as a child unlocked new doors for me. For example, I was not afraid to try new things and accept the lessons that came along with new opportunities. Also, I learned from my parents that going down the path of success isn’t always easy. Lastly, I experienced that life is filled with…

On Thursday, September 15 at Cohasset Elementary school in Van Nuys, I worked at my practicum site for the first time in a Head Start class of three and four year olds. My goal for this first class was to become familiar with the children and the classroom routine. One of the first things I noticed was that all the children and the teachers are Hispanic and speak Spanish, although the class is mostly taught in English. I experienced a diversity issue between myself and the staff and children in the classroom. The main barrier I faced was the language. Some of the children spoke only English in class, others spoke a mixture of English and Spanish, and some spoke only in Spanish. Speaking some Spanish helped me, but the children spoke so softly…

Eileen Kennedy-Moore once wrote, “The path of development is a journey of discovery that is clear only in retrospect, and it’s rarely a straight line.” Although the development to which she is reffering may not be specific, the complexity and sometimes unpredicable nature of children may definitely be summarized by this short quote. As humans, we begin as tiny beings with barely any ability, but, as we grow, we develop into creatures of play and imagination, of right and wrong decisions, and of motivation for the tasks we face in our day-to-day lives. As an Early Childhood Education student, I often have the opportunity to volunteer and to observe a variety of organzations, classrooms, and programs. For this particular class, I was able to analyze a classroom-like environment at the YMCA for children of all ages, and I compared these observations with the appropraite topics of this course.…

According to Michelle Akers, “I think the challenge is, to take difficult and painful times and turn them into something beneficial, something that makes you grow.” Just like every human being, I have had my fair share of challenges to face. My parents were born and raised in Mexico. Being from the type of family both my parents had, education was not an option and no importance was taken toward it. They both dropped out of high school and began to work in factories to help their families with financial problems. They realized how hard it was to earn a living and to maintain a family without a proper education. When I was four years old and my sister was nine, my parents made the decision to send us to Brownsville, TX for a proper American education.…

My early literacy experience was not a big of a deal for me at an early age. When I was in school I always took a reading and writing course with a grain of salt, it was just one more class on my schedule. Literature did not really appeal to me in my early experience. I always think that why do I need to take a literature course in order for me to succeed in the future.…

My love for education has not been limited to school, but also in my own family. My younger sister was born when I was thirteen years old. I spend every summer with her and I deeply enjoy working with her, whether it is the alphabet, counting, or jumping, I am proud to have taken a part in her development.…

I remember it like it was yesterday. Elementary school; second grade; Ms. Rubright’s class to be exact. We were being lined up like cattle going to the slaughterhouse, so we could go on a bathroom break in an orderly fashion. My teacher called on my table, and we stood up and walked over to the line being as quiet as church mice; since that was what was expected by our teacher. It almost seemed like a medieval form of punishment, the way they made us wait half a century before we could actually exit the classroom and use the restrooms. My friend, Matt, a chunky red-head who was always pushing his glasses up on his stubby nose, came to stand behind me after his table was called to line up. At the time I was happy to be standing in line to…
