Personal Narrative: My Air Force Journey
I joined the United States Air Force January 25, 2001. I was barely 18 and ready to be on my own. The back then, in my eyes, was easy. Joining the Air Force meant a free college education, a place to live, and a paycheck. These were important things when you are 18 and on your own. I knew nothing of world events, wars, or terrorism. On June 13, 2001 I began my journey with basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. We learned about the attacks on Khobar Towers, the Oklahoma City bombing, the 1991 attack on the World Trade Center, and all about biological and chemical warfare. We looked at Desert Storm and what it meant to be at war. My comrades and I began to look at life a little differently, but we truly believed that we were in a good place and the world was mostly …show more content…
Somehow, our journey in the military would not include war, terrorism, or anything we were learning. On July 4, 2001 a Desert Storm veteran came into our dormitory and shared her experiences. The fireworks were going off outside and you could tell that most of us wanted to be anywhere other than a cramped dayroom listening to a pretty scary looking technical instructor tell us about a war. She was very descriptive and told us what it meant to be at war and what it is like to see death and destruction. To lose people you work with, whom you are friends with. She ended her stories by playing God Bless the USA and telling us to really think about what we were embarking on and the meaning of the words in the song. I can honestly say those moments changed my life but never prepared me for what I would experience just a few short months later. By July 2001 we were graduating, and moving on to technical school where we would learn our trade. We were all one step closer to being active members in the Air Force. Then on Tuesday September 11, 2001 my world, my life, and my

A time when I took the lead in solving a problem in my community was when I chose my Eagle Project. I wanted my project to impact as many people as possible and I also wanted to give back to the organization that had sponsored my scout troop for so long. I looked over the church grounds and found a need. The church, borders the Harpeth River in Franklin, TN and members can choose to have baptisms done in the river. The problem that existed was that the baptismal site wasn’t safe for those partaking in it or viewing it. The riverbank is steep and there wasn’t a safe place for families to view the event. An old triangular deck was present, but it was small, not adequately anchored and had poorly attached rope rails. My goal was to construct a…

A Long Way Gone Children recently are entering the military. All children, when they emerge from the military come out with different perspectives on life. The effects that the children have will be many as they grow within the military, and that they will for sure have life changing events happen to them. “A Long Way Gone” by Ishmael Beah and the article “Child Soldiers of Sierra Leone” are great resources that tell all about the effect they go through while in the military. The unfortunate perspective of having children in the military, is that they will be and can be programmed to do whatever adults manipulated them to do.…

It was a very hot and humid day. I will never forget that awful day. I just had gotten home from work; the traffic that day was horrible. The mail was in top of my dining room table, and there it was on top of all the mail, the only thing o saw on the envelope was draft and I was the addressee. My reaction was “Oh My God”, my heart was pounding very heart it felt like it was about to jump out of my chest, my ears were burning. All I could think was that we are told that we are helping people and fighting for our freedom. Instead innocent people are being killed; I have lost most of my freedom. What options do I have, leave the country, or hide for the rest of your life. Or go to war not only means serving your country, but helping people along the way. What were my advantages or disadvantages? None of those options were good, at that point I was in shock, and I just could not believe that this was happening to me, till this day I do not remember ever opening that letter.…

I don’t think any American can forget where they were when 9/11 happened. I was going into my history class when I learned about it. My teacher had the T.V. on even though the administration asked the teachers to turn the TV’s off. We watched it and discussed what was going on for the entire hour and a half that we were in the class. My teacher was very emotional and crying and so were some of the students. Some of the students were in shock and others were oblivious to what this meant for our country. I was emotional myself. This was such a tragic event and I didn’t think it would be an event that would affect my life the way that it did. I think I was too young at the time to truly understand the seriousness that would come out of the attacks of 9/11. This tragic event changed America in so many ways.…

Hi Amber, great to "see" you in another class! Thank you and your family for the years of service. The military life has its own culture, but as you have mentioned the frequent moves allow you to experience numerous geographical locations and their cultures. My grandparents immigrated through Ellis Island from Scotland and I have been fortunate to visit where they lived several times.…

The want to serve one's country is a powerful theme around the world. Men and women from countries all around the world risk their lives to ensure the safety and protection of their country. Enlisting in one’s armed forces brings a strong sense of camaraderie and companionship to the soldiers, as they mostly stick with the same people they went to training with. There are also long lasting effects of going to war, such as PTSD, amputations, and various health conditions. One of the biggest things about enlisting is the emotional stress it puts on people’s loved ones. All of these points are evidenced time and time again in Trish Wood’s book, “ What Was Asked of Us” as it tells the accounts and stories of American men and women who fought in the Iraq war.…

I second the fact that lately it has been very crazy. I agree with you about it being very easy to work with people around the world. Although I think that language could get in the way. I really look forward to going over seas to be able to get the experience. This is one thing that I really can’t wait to experience in the military.…

A long time ago, I was once 18. A mere young man just out of highschool. I thought my life was going great: good grades, friends, freedom. That was until the draft hit all of a sudden. All my dreams and goals - everything was gone. I got a letter in the mail telling me I was being selected to be drafted and sent on active duty in Vietnam. My heart sank when I read the letter. What will my family do without me? I walked into my kitchen, sat down, and turned on the TV.…

At the time of the bombings I was stationed at the Nellis Air Force Base located in Nevada just North of Las Vegas. I was organizing papers when my Base commander dramatically announced, “this is it everyone the end is upon”.Not knowing what he meant by that I continued my work.A few seconds later I heard the alarm warning everyone that the U.S had been attacked. Confused and anxious everyone at the base went rushing to the commander for…

My army career was right on track. I had been in the 3 years at this point, coming up on 4, and already had completed air assault school, been awarded my expert infantry badge, and had one 15 month deployment under my belt. I was assigned to the scout platoon sniper section and was waiting for a sniper school packet to get final approval from the company commander. I had been studying for the sergeant promotion board for months. I knew that study guide like the back of my hand, I knew whatever question I was asked by the Command Sergeant Major I would have an answer for. I went to the promotion board that morning and blew it out of the water. My dress uniform was perfect. No one was able to find a single deficiency. The Soldiers Creed and the…

It was about seven in the evening and I got a call from my friend, letting me know she and her grandmother had made it home. Her grandmother is in her 60’s, so there wasn’t much texting going between us. I’d been trying to catch up with her all day to interview her, but I guess she had a very busy weekend. I finally arrived to the house just ready to get the interview over with.…

I would say what I thought and defended and still be open to hear what others had to say. Odd that I feel like that was my first lesson from this. But it really wasn't, the first was how a tragedy can bring people together. On that day and so many months after we came together, we were all American and all suffering. It was so beautiful, how much LOVE we had for our country and fellow citizens. I wish we could get some of that back that love and pride. Then we went to war. My brother, who had been living in VA, joined the Army and went to Iraq for the first time. I do feel ashamed that I wasn't there the first time he left, I don't remember why I wasn't there but I know I wasn't. And I am SO LUCKY to have had him come back from that first tour. Even luckier, that I could see him off and see him come back home every after that. 7 tours of duty and he came home each time and truly, there is *not a single day* that goes by that I am not thankful that my brother is here with us. My heart aches thinking about all of those people who didn't have their loved one come home. I know how much it hurts to just think of what could have happen and some moments, it's crippling. Also today, I always think of Dec. 7 1941, Pearl Harbor, which change so many lives. It…

“Where were you on 9/11?” Every American twenty and older could answer that question. Having been less than two years old at the time, I don’t remember that day very clearly. I, along with my peers, had to learn about the heinous attacks from parents, teachers, and news articles. I didn’t know until I was about ten years old that among the stories of death and despair were tales of American bravery unlike any before.…

An event I've experienced that was life changing was when I obtained the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America. It was an affirmation of years of disciplined work and study to have such a prestigious honor bestowed upon me. In scouting, I developed various moral and ethical tenants that have shaped my foundation in life. Tenants like integrity, honor, reverence, faith in God, a man's role and his responsibility to his family, and a nearly innumerable quantity of experiences growing under the leadership of the Boy Scouts of America have molded me into who I am today in my very core of being. The realization of my dream to become an Eagle Scout took 11 years to obtain, so I'm no stranger to adversity or perseverance. To my memory,…
