Personal Narrative: Mount Hood
I have only been to Mount Hood twice. The first time, I was only seven or eight, and I don’t remember much. The second trip, the one I’m writing about, happened only a few months ago. That one was really fun, and I will most certainly remember it.

We usually take trips during breaks from school, like spring break or winter break, or during the summer, but we rarely take big trips on the weekends. We left friday afternoon, right after school ended. The car ride was about 3 hours. That may not seem like a long time, but with a baby in the car, it seemed to take forever. Babies cry a lot. When we finally got to the little house that we had rented for the weekend, everyone was tired and went to sleep quickly.

The next day we went skiing. I had never skied before in my life, but both my parents are really good at it. When we went to rent equipment, I saw a four-year-old trying on a pair of skis. The logical interpretation of this, of course, was that skiing was easy enough that a four-year-old could do it. This was a mistake.

When we got outside, we started on a hill that could not have been more than 5 feet tall, and was not very steep. It wasn’t even a hill, really just a mound. It was near the

Unfortunately, this time I fell over hard, and somehow got snow up my nose. I’m not even sure how that would be possible, but somehow it happened. It was freezing cold, and my face hurt for the next 5 minutes, but it wasn’t too bad. I found that after you ski for a while, you get bruises on your calves from pressing against the rim of the ski boot. Ski boots are not like normal boots. They are two pieces of heavy plastic joined together with one joint at the ankle and lined with padding. As you can probably imagine, this gives you about the same amount of flexibility as if you stuck your foot in concrete. I suppose they have to be like this to hold your foot really steady in the ski, but they are kind of

Have you ever wondered where you would be if you would have chosen another path? Have you ever wondered how that choice could have changed your life if you would have made it? I lied to my family, my friends and myself. Even before I accepted Fort McMurray as my home, the lies I verbally regurgitated became more real to me than the reality that I was participating in. Eventually, the reality I thought I had control over was in fact the reality that I lost control over. Throughout this three part essay I will attempt to explore the following: first, addressing why I began to construct lies that affected my perception of Fort McMurray from the beginning to now; second, how the interconnectedness of my life and the price of a barrel of oil dictated decisions affecting my personal and professional life; third, including alternative perspectives from interviewing local individuals in addition to examining other global…

Have you had any volunteer experiences and, if so, what did you like about participating? Give at least one example of what you liked. I have volunteered with Canterbury United Methodist Church on a mission trip and the Birmingham Zoo. When I volunteered with Canterbury, we went on a mission trip to Asheville, North Carolina for a week during the summer. I had the opportunity to travel to another city, in a different state, to help those who are less fortunate and live in harsh conditions. Seeing the harsh conditions that some people live in was very eye-opening for me because it really made me realize how fortunate, not only I, but the rest of my community is. I loved helping the people in Asheville because I knew that it is something they…

Pow! Right smack in my forehead crushing my skull. The metal baseball bat knocked in my skull. It was a warm sunny day in the middle of the summer. Joey, my brother, was hitting tennis balls over my house. Little 10 year old me was playing in the yard and my brother purposely pushed me far away so he wouldn’t hit me. Oh how I was a stupid little kid. I was intrigued by what he was doing so I started wandering over to like how not knowing little kids do. As I approached my brother he was so focused on himself that he did not see me. When I finally reached him he had just set up to hit another ball. He hits the ball, but on his back rotation, the bat makes contact with my head. I fell hard on the pavement. Before I went unconscious I heard my…

“Yay!”, I exclaimed, as I jogged across the back porch. My grandpa, or “Papa” as I christened him, had just announced that we could go out to the backyard to do yard work, which we called “Rough and Tough Stuff,” which always made me enigmatic because it struck me as enticing. I caught a whiff of Rosemary and a hint of Lavender. Papa’s chocolate labrador retriever, Buju, greeted me with a “Woof!”, and a nose as wet as a melon ball. Papa started sauntering back toward the door, slow as a snail, when I asked, “Where you going?” (I was about five years old at the time, so I did not have much knowledge of correct grammar.) “I have to get the tools,” he explained. “Don’t go into the yard while I’m gone, okay? I’ll only be…

We drove to the top of the slopes. It took us about 45 minutes and we were at an altitude of more than 12 000 feet. The sun made breathtaking views, and the air was as clean as a whistle. Sometimes you wondered if you would not be able to you catch your breath, but it just the height that made breathing for the first time so difficult.
