Personal Narrative: Journey To A Cross Country
“Awards become corroded, friends gather no dust” - Jesse Owens. This quote was proudly displayed on the back of the team shirts for my senior year. The design was chosen unanimously by the upperclassmen due to the fact that the quote tied together all of the meaningful experiences that we’d shared with as friends and classmates throughout our years as cross country runners. The gift of running has given me so much in life in regards to comradery and friendship. The experiences gained through running Cathedral cross country, have shaped my character and taught me the value of hard work and perseverance, leaving an enduring mark on who I am.
As an athlete, I managed to achieve a great deal in cross country. I’ve varsity lettered for four years and ran in the state meet my senior year of cross country. For my 10th through 12th grade years, I joined my team on the annual Mountain Run. This trip was invitational, where a small group of the top tier runners had the opportunity to complete high altitude training in the Black Hills and Big Horn Mountains. The thin air, combined with grueling climbs over mountain

As captain, I was given the opportunity to act as a leader, mentor and friend to my teammates. I spent the season helping everyone to run their hardest on meet days and to enjoy themselves with fun activities like our annual Triathalon, and Weekend Getaway trip. For the vast majority of runners on our team, cross country’s appeal wasn’t always the running, but the respect and unity that our team offered to those who were a part of it. Some of my proudest memories come from the fact that I was able to help create such a fantastic experience that many of those kids would treasure forever, even if the running wasn’t necessarily there passion. My years of running and growing as a leader, gave me the tools I needed to be a positive role model to

Being a team member on my school's cross country team was my most meaningful extracurricular activity. Though I would be a liar if I called myself an amazing runner, running cross country meant so much more to me than just PRs. I learned how to be a team player, how to connect with others different from myself, and how to push through both difficulty and pain. Through my experiences with running, I was able to cultivate my own personal sense of motivation and determination. I learned that nothing can truly be achieved without hard work.…

Gallons of sweat trickled down my face while I seamlessly ran up and down the track. At times, I didn’t think I would get through it. It was an everyday struggle to continue my journey down the path of success. At practice, we would relentlessly run and run and run until our breathing neared nonexistent. I, for one, could barely keep up, but the fight inside of me did not die out. My coach would tell us that our meet was nearing and our will to win kept pushing everyone harder. We ran three to four miles a day with little to no breaks. He would yell motivational phrases to push us, but in all honesty, we just wanted to get back in our beds and sleep the day off. Although this is true, It became important to me to work to better myself and though…

This is my second year on the Peabody Magnet High Soccer team, and I was even awarded the Coach’s award for playing midfield and made honorably mention in my district ranking. I also am the Co-Captain of the Peabody Flag line. Being on the soccer and flag teams taught me that hard work really pays off and really forced me to challenge myself. When the flag line first started, we did not have a coach or experience. Although we taught ourselves our own routines, techniques and twirls; we placed and won a 3rd place trophy in our first battle of the bands competition. It was the smallest trophy there, but it meant more to me than any big one could. It just proved to me again that if I put my mind to something I could accomplish…

My freshman year, I decided to join my high school Cross Country team. When I started running, it quickly became clear that I was not a gifted athlete. I was slow and often did not enjoy the sport. When the season first started, it took me forty minutes to run a 5k. This time was appalling but oddly, it was what kept me from giving up. There were times when I wanted to quit and go back to never running but the thought of that forty-minute 5k stopped me from doing so. I stayed on the team and pushed myself harder and harder every day. When I felt like stopping, I made myself go even further. I came to practice every single day and sometimes I stayed late. On the days that we did not have practice as a team, I ran on my own. I was dedicated…

When I became a junior, I also became the captain for that sport as well, when the season started we won a few meets and then we went to district meets. I have been part of Barrington High School’s track team for all three of my high school years and I intend on being on it again next year. As a varsity member for the duration of my track career, I have had the opportunity to be a leader on my team through positive energy and hard work. By working hard and continuing to have a positive attitude in both meets and practices I have been able to lead by example and have a positive impact on our track program. Other than my leadership role within track, I have been a leader by volunteering in my schools “broncos committed” program. Through this program, I have been able to attend middle school events, encouraging up and coming freshman to live a drug and alcohol free lifestyle once they enter high school. Being a leader is something that is important to me because I can make a difference by setting a good example for the people on my gymnastics and track teams as well as the other people in my…

Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…

As the old saying goes, “Those who can’t, teach.” Those are the precise words that got Bill Saunders to where he is today. As a child he spent his entire life growing up in the same brown colored house in Alpine, Utah. While in high school Bill decided to join the track team as a fun after school activity with his friends. He had never truly enjoyed running before so his expectations for the season weren’t exactly high by any means. Bill decided to join the long distance team his first season in ninth grade. Bill recalls contemplating quitting the team after the extreme amounts of pain he had been in after the first week. However, his mother, being the pushy, strong, good example in his life that he had needed, told him that if you start something, you must finish it, “I didn’t raise quitters!” He took his mothers words to heart and from that point he changed his mind set about track and went forth with the rest of the season having the goal of getting the school record for the one mile run. “It was a lot of hard work and I remember going to practice some days feeling like absolute garbage, but I knew what I had to do if I was ever going to reach my goals, so I stuck to it, and did just that.” At the end of his first track season, Bill had in fact broken the school record for the…

I’ve always tried to be very involved in my school. I’m a member of almost every club, but my heart lies with my cross country team. While I didn’t always enjoy running in the grueling heat, it taught me about teamwork, dedication, and endurance. More often than not, my coach would be chuckling at me because I was trying to push a fellow teammate that wanted to walk. I made it my personal goal to push my teammates and help them do their best. My team got region champions in 2010 and this past season. Needless to say, we made our coach very proud.…

In cross country, when you’re out on the trails, you’re out on your own. You only have yourself to get through your race in the present moment, and are responsible for your outcome at the end. However, before your race, you prepare with other people who have the same goals as you. They drive you to work harder in your workouts, pushing you to limits that you never thought were once achievable.…

As I cheered my athletes on to the finish line, I loved seeing the joy in their faces as their years of preparation paid off. They were talented—not just talented considering their disabilities, but talented in general. Many possessed a positivity that I hope to emulate. It was clear from my experience at the Utah Special Olympics that while I was there to help these athletes, they did far more to help me. I strengthened my leadership skills as I solved problems. I did things I was uncomfortable with. Above all, I loved watching two friends and competitors, whom I am with in an attached photo, encourage each other before they raced. As I noticed their camaraderie, I had the impression that we should all come together, despite our differences, to cheer each other on. This is the feeling that I took with me when I left the games, and it has stayed with me over six months…
