Personal Narrative: High School Debate
During my sophomore year in high school, I decided to join the UIL Cross-Examination debate team. I honestly did not want to do it, but my friend was in desperate need of a partner, so I decided to help her out. I had no experience in public speaking, let alone debate.
At our first competition, I was extremely nervous. We only practiced the day before, but my friend reassured me that it’s going to be okay, and I should just “dip my feet in the water” to get a feel for debate. So as I walk over to the podium to deliver my 8 minute speech, I tried to look as poised and confident as possible. Once I opened my mouth, everything just fell apart.
