Personal Narrative: Football Injury
This injury had become a painfully troublesome and uncontrollable interruption in my life. I never thought I could be back to the level where I was at before my injury, but I came back both mentally and physically stronger because of my hard work and perseverance to work to become a better player even before my injury. I was motivated to generate the feelings of inspiration and pride when I reached my goal of playing to my full potential on the cricket field.

I considered the gravitas of my actions only once before deciding to bandage a part of my body. I had wondered if girl I sit next to in Sociology lecture would believe the stories behind my injury. I had wondered if my friends would notice the injury and try to aid me as I walked around the bustling city. I had wondered if they would be annoyed and the constant reference to my injuries. I began to question myself as I wrapped the bright blue bandage around my knee. Around once, then twice, and fastened it securely on the back of my leg. I had spent an hour trying to figure out which body part I should bandage. The wrists were too obvious, my back to hidden, my left ankle too obscured by my new Adidas superstars. So I settled on my knee. My knee could play a central character in thousands of stories that could have caused injury. I began to picture a tumultuous decent down the cement stairs of 55 E 10th street, a catastrophic encounter with a street sign marking the fire line as a no-park zone, an awry Uber making direct contact with my kneecap in the middle of a rainy overcast afternoon. I push those thought away instead focusing on the Yoko Ono’s words. I must only make up the story when someone…

For as long as can remember I have had problems with my knee. It all started back in middle school, when we were playing basketball in our math class. My teacher at the time, Mr. Siem, would play with us. On this particular day, we were on opposing teams and he was bringing down the ball. When I went to defend him, he never stopped and he ran into me. His knee landed on mine with all of his weight. I knew right away that something was wrong.…

It all started at ninth street with some friends of mine John and I started recruiting some people to come play football with us. I honestly didn’t know I had a pretty decent arm. I originally was going to start practicing to play wide receiver instead of quarterback. At the time Odell Beckham Jr. ( wide receiver for the New York Giants ) was extremely explosive and dynamic on offense. Seeing him blow up on offense made me want to try out for wide receiver. But somehow John convinced me to play quarterback.…

Have you ever felt as though the whole world was spinning out of control and that you might go flying if you tried to stand, or have you ever felt the feeling of your brain rattling against your skull as a headache pounded its way into your forehead. That is the feeling of a concussion, and if lucky you are enough to have never experienced one just think of a jackhammer against cement. It is a constantly pounding, pulsating, and pulverizing sensation that demands all of your attention. Concussions are selfish. They do not care about the project you have to finish or the phone call you have to make to your grandma because they dictate all of your actions, they have complete control of you regardless of what you have planned.…

That was, until on that last day of tryouts when the two coaches pulled me out of a drill and told me they wanted to talk to me.…
