Personal Narrative Essay: My Trip To Ottawa
It was August 21, 1858. I had just gotten up and started to get ready for my debate later in the day. Molly (or Mary as we call her) had just came in to our room and was giving me some encouragement
“Make sure you give it your all!” she told me.
The debate had started at 2:00 pm that day. I was going to take bus bus like a normal citizen would do, unlike Stephen Douglas does. I had put on a ruffled shirt, and carried my speech notes in an old carpet bag.
“Good bye.” I called to Molly, Willie, and Tad.
When I got on the city bus I thought about what I was going to say and discuss with Mr. Stephen Douglas, who was the person I was going after for his seat in congress.
When I arrived to Ottawa there was already a massive crowd waiting for the

He began his speech by questioning why he was chosen to give this speech, “Fellow citizens, pardon me, and allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here today? What have I or those I represent to do with your national independence?”. He mentions that he for one, is of a different color than the ones who were truly celebrating this occasion, “I am not included within the pale of this…

I lied to my family, my friends and myself. Even before I accepted Fort McMurray as my home, the lies I verbally regurgitated became more real to me than the reality that I was participating in. Eventually, the reality I thought I had control over was in fact the reality that I lost control over. Throughout this three part essay I will attempt to explore the following: first, addressing why I began to construct lies that affected my perception of Fort McMurray from the beginning to now; second, how the interconnectedness of my life and the price of a barrel of oil dictated decisions affecting my personal and professional life; third, including alternative perspectives from interviewing local individuals in addition to examining other global…

5:45 a.m., Wednesday, Boxing Day, 2013. I was sleeping soundly in my bed when the phone rang. I could hear the sound of someone getting up to pick up the phone. Shortly afterwards, I could hear the sound of weeping. I heard my Mom tell my Dad that Oma had passed away. Two days ago we had received word that she had fallen on her back and suffered a concussion. The fall might have been caused by her struggle with Alzheimer’s.…

In a very heated time in American history, just before the civil war, with the nation spilt in two over the issue of slavery, Fredrick Douglas had the daunting task of speaking in front of a well-to-do predominately white crowd on the Fourth of July. As present day Americans, we know the importance of this day; we know that after a long war with the British, this was a glorious day celebrating a time in which our founding fathers declared freedom from the oppression of British rule. Taking all of this into account, Douglass had to let the audience know the emotions that he was feeling. “I do not remember ever to have appeared as a speaker before any assembly more shrinkingly, nor with greater distrust in my ability, than I do this day.” (2102) Douglass doesn’t…

It all started when we left from the hotel around five o’clock, hoping to get to the CN Tower on time. We were on vacation in Toronto in mid July, we had just arrived here a day ago from Niagara Falls. When we left we would have never imagined that this would be one of the longest walks some of us have taken. Pleasantly, we left for the CN Tower, which we thought couldn’t be a great amount of distance from our hotel. We were wrong!…

There has been many cases in which I have helped an outsider feel welcome. One time in particular is when I played tag with this little boy at church since he was new and no one else played with him. Originally, I was outside eating candy and talking to my friends at church. I noticed that this little boy was standing all alone watching all the other little kids play without him. I thought that maybe he was upset so I went over to him and asked if he wanted the rest of my gummy worms. He seemed nervous at first, but eventually he started talking to me. I learned that he was five years old and he was visiting his grandparents for the weekend. His older brother was outside playing basketball with some of the other older boys at the church, and…

If you have ever been bullied, you know where I am coming from when I say that it is something that no one should ever go through. Unfortunately, I have gone through it before and I am glad to have fought through it. I can clearly remember the time when I used to get bullied. My family and I had just moved to Canada a few months ago and I wasn't able to speak English very well at the time. I was so excited to learn everything there was to know about Canada, especially now that I knew that everyone didn’t live in igloos. Before coming to Canada I was told by a friend in India that everyone lived in igloos, of course being six at the time I believed her without questioning it. I was also very excited to see snow for the first time because,…

On the second day of school during my sophomore year, I realized how much Wahlert meant to me. It had become my home, the place where I felt like I belonged; school almost even seemed like a break from summer. Over the summer, I had become an empty shell and spent my time at the computer wasting the time away; the only interactions I had were with my family, and on rare occasion with my best friends, when we had sleepovers. To see the people I had missed over the summer was great. All of these things felt so true in that moment.…

Thinking of some of my most substantial accomplishments, getting into Ryerson University comes across as one major one; however, the one accomplishment that holds the largest magnitude to me was getting hired this past summer with the CNIB. Firstly, it was a lengthily interview process, going through multiple stages, I had a leadership position lined up with the Region of Peel but I turned it down in the hopes of landing a job with the CNIB. Eventually I did receive a conditional job offer, pending I got a number of qualifications, such as my F-class drivers license and CPR and First aid. This summer as a whole was an amazing experience and a huge accomplishment for myself. I truly developed and grew as an individual, and it was working with…

As a Canadian high school student living in Alberta I only consider myself as part of the nation I was born in, which is Canada. My parents were born in Pakistan and almost all of my family is in the Middle East, although a few also reside in areas such as Australia and the United Kingdom. Despite this, I have only been to these areas once in my lifetime, and during that time I was barely a year old. This is why I do not consider myself a part of any other nation besides Canada. The culture and language of these areas, especially the lifestyle of the middle east are very familiar to me, having grown up surrounded by them. However, I do not have any personal connection to the east and because I have lived in Canada my entire life, I cannot even fathom the idea of aligning myself with a nation other than Canada and I do not consider myself a hyphenated Canadian.…
