We walked into the lunchroom, through the double doors
Food mopped off the linoleum floors.
I walked to my table with my tray
Chicken again today… yay!
I bite into my mashed potatoes
Some kid next me had halos
I eat the chicken cold and dry
I should have gotten deli, I don’t know why
I sat with my friends, Jim and Tom
My friend, Blaire sat with her friend, Ron.
Jim brought his chips.
Tom was grossed out and bit his lips.
I made a face
Blaire claims the chips were a disgrace
She then said, “A little amount in a bag?
It’s so annoying it makes me gag.”

We eat our lunch
In our tiny, friendly bunch
The kid in the table next to ours begins to make a mess

The past few days at placement have been an emotional rollercoaster for me. In past few days I experienced tears of joy, and tears of sadness, one moment I was happy with a survivor’s growth and the next moment I was heartbroken to hear the struggles they faced to be where they are at now. At one point I felt like I had no control over my emotions and it was my emotions that had control over me. I felt so weak when I had no control, but I also felt good and free to let all my emotions out. The past few days at placement made me reevaluate certain things in my personal life, and changed my perception for a lot of things.…

There has been many cases in which I have helped an outsider feel welcome. One time in particular is when I played tag with this little boy at church since he was new and no one else played with him. Originally, I was outside eating candy and talking to my friends at church. I noticed that this little boy was standing all alone watching all the other little kids play without him. I thought that maybe he was upset so I went over to him and asked if he wanted the rest of my gummy worms. He seemed nervous at first, but eventually he started talking to me. I learned that he was five years old and he was visiting his grandparents for the weekend. His older brother was outside playing basketball with some of the other older boys at the church, and…

He calls the waiter over a second time, demanding an explanation. “This is… Well, it’s just bad,” he stutters, seemingly to the utter offense of the waiter. “Your food is perfectly fine,” they again insist, despite the accusation. To this, Mallard shakes his head in resignation. Unfortunately, his voluminous afro turns what would be a serious situation into a comical one. His action was, however inadvertently, a lot like a poodle playing tug-of-war. Seeing the waiter’s stifled giggles, he realizes this, and his face turns beet red. “T-this is bad,” he says, before breaking down laughing. “You said that already,” the waiter comments, laughing as well. “Well, it seemed worth repeating,” he sassily replies, still cracking a smile. The waiter takes a deep breath, trying to gain their composure, and returns to the kitchen; this time, Mallard follows them, hoping to see exactly what is going on with the cooks. Inside, he sees unimaginable horror: the chef is duct-taped to the ceiling, screeching, while huge, sentient carrots with tree branch-like arms man the various stations, ruining the food with scum and dirt pulled from the stoop…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…
