Personal Narrative-Dirt Clod War
It’s fourth and nineteen, Tampa Bay’s special teams unit comes on, trying to pin Carolina deep in their own territory. “Hike!” It’s a fake! Tampa Bay’s punter drops back. He finds a double covered, third string running back streaking down the field. He throws the ball as hard as he can. The ball travels a total of three yards before an oncoming Julius Peppers snags it out of the air. “Interception! He’s at the thirty. The twenty. The ten. He could go all the way! Touchdown!” This was the play that capped off my brothers 56-0 beat-down of me in our Blackfoot cousins Madden tournament. Taking a moment to comprehend what had just happened, I stared at the screen in disbelief. The entire ensuing minute was madness. “You cheated!”, “That would …show more content…
The teams were Justin and Bobby against me, Tyler, and Paul. This game always ended in defeat for my team, partly because we were inferior at throwing, and partly because Justin and Bobby would shove rocks into their dirt clods. At night, we would run inside, eat something, and run downstairs to play, “War in the Dark.” This was just pure chaos. The rules went as follows: every ball in the house would be dumped in the basement, the lights would be turned off, and we would throw balls at each other until we were too tired to continue. We would finish the night by turning on Bobby’s favorite movie, Gettysburg, and drift off to sleep. After successfully defending the Union’s position, General Buford triumphantly declares, “General Reynolds, we’ve held the high ground.” (Maxwell). This line may seem insignificant, but still to this day, after any small success, we’ll turn to each and say, “General Reynolds, we’ve held the high …show more content…
They spent hours perfecting their project. Their hard work culminated in a win at the state competition, and an opportunity to go to Washington DC and compete in the National tournament. I was so excited! Not for Tyler and Bobbies accomplishment, but because our entire family was going up to DC to support them. This meant a whole week of hanging out with my best friends! The trip was awesome. At every cool place we visited, we would get out our camera and make a little video about our adventures in DC. Cannon Productions was born! Our first video was published years later. The film follows a group of young teenager males, tracking their workout and dietary habits. After a period of time, the two who don’t take fitness and nutrition seriously, end up pretty chubby, on the couch, drinking soda (Productions). Was it a good video? No, but it was very fun to make, and was a way for us to bond without launching rock-filled dirt clods at each other. As we made more videos, the quality of our videos increased. They were never good, but they were a lot better than the first one we had

With ever story of victory, comes a drowning idea of failure. Throughout our live, these battles are fought, taking not only mental strength, but physical as well. Some of these battles are chosen, while the rest flank from behind. With this in mind, a story of victory must be told, on behalf of my Aunt, Joenell. Her battle took place in April, of 2009, she went to the Suttee Delta hospital, in Antioch California for a doctor’s visit, for fear that something was wrong, during this visit she informed her doctor that she felt a not on her left breast. Soon after, she had a mammogram, and an ultrasound done, revealing three cancerous lumps. As the doctor went into detail, she started to realize the gravity of the situation. For the first time; at the age of 59, she was confronted with the most life threating event she had ever faced. So for a second opinion, she went to the Epic Cancer center, also in Antioch California. Certainly, the last thing anyone would like to hear during a doctor’s visit, she knew there would be some decisions to be made, time to study up.…

In the short story, “How to Tell a True War Story,” the implicit problem that is created about the story by its first line, “this is true,” is that the readers may think the line is sarcasm and not believe the information being said. The readers will question if the story is true or not. Throughout the story the narrator says how many war stories are not true so I do not know what to believe. The author, Tim O’Brien, says that nothing can be believed to be true, which makes the story ironic. He says, “In war you lose your sense of the definite, hence your sense of truth itself, and therefore it’s safe to say that in a true war story nothing much is ever very true” (95). I would think that this story is not true after that being said.…

How do you decide what is true and what is false? In war the line blurs even more. We hear war stories and wonder about the truth of these stories. We love to believe the stories of heroism and bravery. Now how do we know that these stories are real and not created propaganda? The Things They Carried by Tim O?Brien is a fiction book that shines some light on war stories. This complex book focuses on a complex war. The Vietnam War was complex for the reasons surrounding it. Some of the reasons were; the question why we were over there, governments that told half truths on what was going on, and the style of fighting was totally different compared to the past wars. This new style is called guerrilla warfare. O?Brien writes stories that make you…

The next morning, I was to report to Logistics and Strategy. People were all over this place. Seaman lined the walls with headsets on and screens in front of them. They used their fingers to tap the screens and then shout out coordinates. I walked down the row of officers scrutinizing interactive pixel maps. They had the ability to visualize the ships and planes in real time with holographic symbols. I passed them and walked up some steps to a clear glass room. TOO THIN, Fernando, Chad, Mallory, and five Admirals were there. One Admiral for each permanent coalition country. There were also a line of officers outside the room, waiting for orders.…

Pow! Right smack in my forehead crushing my skull. The metal baseball bat knocked in my skull. It was a warm sunny day in the middle of the summer. Joey, my brother, was hitting tennis balls over my house. Little 10 year old me was playing in the yard and my brother purposely pushed me far away so he wouldn’t hit me. Oh how I was a stupid little kid. I was intrigued by what he was doing so I started wandering over to like how not knowing little kids do. As I approached my brother he was so focused on himself that he did not see me. When I finally reached him he had just set up to hit another ball. He hits the ball, but on his back rotation, the bat makes contact with my head. I fell hard on the pavement. Before I went unconscious I heard my…

The Chargers were up to punt. The Chiefs anticipated the punt and returned the ball to the 25 yard line. This time the Chiefs took the ball 75 yards for a touchdown. The Chargers now had the ball. This drive capitalized in a two yard touchdown run followed by the two point conversion, so the game was now tied 20-20. The Chiefs got the ball and proceeded to have a three-and-out. The Chiefs were in a bad situation. The Chargers had the ball with under 5 minutes left and good field position. The chargers got the ball down to the 15 yard line with under a minute to go. The Chiefs’ loss was inevitable. My grandpa and I began to get out of our seats and head out of the stadium, when suddenly there was a monstrous roar from the crowd. I turned around to see that Philip Rivers had fumbled the snap and the Chiefs had recovered the ball. It was a second life for the Chiefs. The Chiefs were unable to score in the remaining 48 seconds, and were forced to punt and head into overtime.…

The bloody plane was shot down…I was sleeping dreaming about a concoction of fish and chips and my home before the war. I lived on a farm, and I had my own horse…I miss him. My dad taught me how to ride when I was four; riding would provide me relief from school and farming. Anyways, I then I awoke to a storm of fire. The plane was literally sliced in two. I think the beastly enemy shot us down. Even though they shot us clean out of the sky, I wish to thank them and show some British manners to them because this island is beautiful. It has fruit, and the sights are more beautiful than anything back home. There are even pigs on the island that we could eat. Sadly, I thought myself alone until a booming noise thundered through the jungle. I was scared; I thought it was an earthquake, although I have never experienced one before.…

When you are someone’s support system you take on multiple roles that indirectly deteriorate your self preservation. Being a listener or a shoulder to cry on, requires sacrifices that, in the moment, you do not even recognize as imposing. Voluntarily and willingly being there for someone begins with the unwavering doubt that you and your own problems cannot and will not prevail over your person’s immediate crisis. Depending on the duration of your duty, a somewhat selfish thought of inconvenience is bound to surface. But, that wave of retraction is almost always combatted by a riptide of dedication and loyalty that brings you back to sea, where all you can do is tread. In turn, the suppression of self regarding issues regularly comes with a layer of obligation and a sting of bitterness.…

The Civil War legacy still has an impact on Americans today. Today, most Americans look at the Civil War in an awe-inspired perspective. People try to skip over the blood and ugliness that resulted because of it, and instead try to focus on the courage and heroic deeds that soldiers performed. Many today are more likely to view the war as a fight for black freedom instead of for state’s rights, which is what it had previously been known for. The South still seems proud of the Confederate flag, even though it is the cause of a lot of controversy. Some people view it as part of their heritage. Certain topics of the Civil War are still well-known throughout society. Abraham Lincoln, the Gettysburg Address, and the Emancipation proclamation are all examples of what people associate with the Civil War. People try to remember iconic people and images like these, instead of the blood, gore, and hate that took place.…

I had my worst vacation in Vietnam in 1985. I stayed in Hanoi, in the northern part (of Vietnam). I have an older friend who served in the USMC from 1960 to 1976 and was captured and held by NVA from 1969 to 1975, and he was with me. He had these flashbacks all the time and I couldn’t stand it. The first morning he went nuts and we had to take the next flight back to US. He tried to assault a local who had a hairstyle that almost all of NVA used. I stopped him before the local was incapacitated.…
