Personal Narrative: Continual Drive Of Perfection And Determination
Everyone experiences a moment in their life that defines who they are. Your experiences are what make you unique. For me, this moment happened only a few years ago. My continual drive for perfection and determination to succeed became evident all within the same day. On that particular day I learned just how relentless I was in my ability to practice, how to keep a good composure through difficult situations, and how my continual strive to stay focused would lead to success. The many hours of practice, months and months of nitpicking each and every note, along with learning the rhythms and the dynamics had benefited me during my audition. I was ready for my first ever district band audition, so I thought. Sophomore year was one of those years where I thought I knew what I was doing, but in reality I had no idea. I was starting to find where I fit in and who my friends would be for the remaining years of high school. These friends happened to have the similar interests as I did, music. Being one giant band family, we all supported and helped each other. Just the year before I had grown quite a bit as a player and succeeded in making the Derby High School Wind …show more content…
My focus and determination had landed me a one way ticket to district band. I realized many things about myself that day. One of them being that I get really nervous when I play in front of others. Another thing was that I noticed how much I truly enjoyed what I was doing. Sure, I was a one point having a mental breakdown, but I still continued to enjoy the process. Above all, I realized how focused and relentless I am, on whatever it may be that I’m doing. Once I have my mind set on something, I will do everything in my power to accomplish or complete that goal/ task. It’s something not everyone has in them, but the focused mentality is one that I will forever benefit from even as a grow and get older. After all, it is part of who I

I spent the whole night in the worst hospital, then I got 18 stitches in the bottom of my foot. It also set back my ability to play football. My mistake was going outside without shoes, now I wear my shoes all the time.…

    Bob Hope Band Scholarship

From his first steps on the vaudeville stage, to his last USO show, Bob Hope was entertaining. Mr. Hope was a comedian and an actor, yet he still reached an unmatchable caliber of musical ability. While his talents were far greater than mine, I still feel that there are many similarities between us. His love of music inspired me to appreciate its role in my life even more. Since I began playing the saxophone in seventh grade, music has been one of the centers of my life. I compete, perform and most importantly, practice on a consistent basis. The band program at my high school is poorly funded, and thus offers few opportunities in the way of musical challenges. However, because of my love of music and feeling of obligation to my classmates, I continue to be an active member and hold the position of drum major. To further challenge myself, I auditioned for and was accepted to the Louisville Youth Orchestra saxophone ensemble. This ensemble challenges my abilities and requires me to often seek help from my private instructor. While my performances with this ensemble may not be perfect, due to the level of difficulty of the music, I…

Walking into the locker room about to get ready to go to our last football game of the season. I could smell the sweaty equipment from the kids who never take their pads home. The Hempfield Spartans 7th grade team would be ending their season 0-7 if we didn’t win today. As I was changing into my pads my friend mike walked in the room. I said “you ready for tonight”. “Heck yeah” replied Mike.…

In chapter 12, the key event to me was when Claudia and Finn talked to each other through the keys. I felt many emotions when reading their interaction one of them being happy. I felt happy when they talked to each other because it was a turning point in the story in my opinion. I also felt surprised because at first, I thought by having two keys, there would be a lock that would need both keys to hear and speak to each other. I also felt confused by the way they conversed; How could they now hear each other but not before. I think by having one key being touched, the other key can hear because on page 153 Claudia says she breathed and rubbed on the key making it warm and on page 154 Finn says when he touches the key it's warm.I like the way the author wrote the scene from both perspectives, it gave us the readers a clearer understanding of how both Finn and Claudia felt. I also like how the author described the way both keys affect each other and have a "key" connection.…

I wanted to be like all my other friends and play the clarinet, but instead I was chosen to play the flute. I did not understand at first why Mr. Peirce wanted me to play the flute, I thought it was complicated and would be difficult to function. We started by fingering and playing one note at a time repeatedly until each note was well played. Next, we started playing notes together to make sure we knew how to go from one to the other smoothly. Lastly, we learned scales, also known as playing the letters of the staff up then down. Soon after having these lessons of learning how to finger the notes and how to correctly blow in my mouth piece, I realized it was much easier then it looked. After a year, I was moved into the high school band. There were a small number of flutes, so we had to play very loud. We started by learning small songs. By playing a new song every day, I started to memorize the keys which made playing much easier. As the months passed Mr. Peirce placed a music piece in front of us known as “Bella’s Lullaby”. I was then ecstatic! Bella’s Lullaby was the piece played in one of my favorite movies, Twilight. It took us weeks to learn and another to perfect. After learning the piece I finally knew what it felt like to hear music speak. The piece was full of emotion including a lot of crescendo and decrescendo. Meanwhile, after finishing the song, Mr. Peirce thought that it should be played amongst an audience. We were to invite all our family and friends to what we called a concert. After playing the piece, along with other small pieces that we learned, we were given a round of applause. That night, Mr. Peirce awarded me with the “Most Improved…

Ever since I stopped playing the piano, I yearned to learn a new instrument. After testing out a wide range of instruments from the trombone to the guitar, I finally found one that fit my personality: the clarinet. Then over the years, I started to learn the different techniques to better my playing, all while performing with the Kansas City Youth Symphony, school band programs, and the spring musicals. But as the curtain fell for the last time on the musical my freshman year, the District Music Festival was looming just around the corner. Through my preparation for Districts, I learned that everybody can have a different…

I have performed in New York City, the Georgia Dome, Disney World, and Lucas Oil Stadium. I’ve been given the opportunity to work with distinguished individuals from around the country and invited to participate in select ensembles. But it has given me so much more than musical experiences. The discipline required to be a musician has weaved its way into many aspects of my academic life as well, creating a more focused and driven person who has continued to succeed in the rigorous academics I’ve been challenged with. I have also developed a creative mindset, that at times, seems uncontrollable. Whether it be creating videos, finding ways to incorporate engineering into an English project, or writing my next original percussion ensemble piece, it seems the applications for my creativity have become…

Drive is something that tons of people have not yet to grasp. The word drive itself is just as powerful as its definition. Having a drive for something means there’s passion in what you’re doing. My drive is to get out of bed every day and be productive. It’s my drive that pushes me to get to work and push myself forward. Having that drive for something isn’t something I would want to let go of either. The problem today is that it’s that it’s hard to have a drive for something since it may take a while to achieve that goal. Sometimes I want to give up just thinking it’s not worth it in the long run, but an underlying drive kicks in that keeps me going.…

“Consistency!” Paul, Adam, and Mr. Dietrich loved to scream this word at us. Band camp was probably the best and the worst days of my life but I would go through it all over again if given the chance. There were times when Paul would get so frustrated with the front ensemble that he would just leave without saying when he would be back or not and whenever he did that it was a bit of a saddening realization. It wasn’t just Paul that got mad like this Adam got just as mad and when Dietrich would get mad like that, it was time to duck and cover. What all of this made me realize though was that practicing is the only thing that will help you get good and sheer talent is never enough. I was dumb enough to ever think that my talent and family history in fine arts was going to cut it. Now though I can say that practice makes perfect and practice is the only thing to make perfect.…

In seventh grade, my brother joined the middle school band. This was the start of a new beginning for me. My perspective of others started to broaden slightly by being exposed to some band members who were my brother’s friends. Three years later, when I entered seventh grade, I decided to join the middle school band and play the trumpet. I finally was a part of the group that I had been mocking for years. This was a large step for me. I was about to embark on a tremendous journey that would completely change my perspective on life. I would start to realize, as I became closer to the other members, that band students are not all the geeks that they are made out to be. While some members are a little quirky and some of the things that I did in band were a little weird, I truly discovered all of the great things that band has to offer. As I soon came to realize, members of marching bands gain valuable character traits, leadership skills, and academic benefits that help them excel in…

The band has been an integral part of my life since I joined back in 7th grade. I’ve had several hobbies over the years, but band is one of the few activities that have sparked my interest. It has created an environment where my strengths can positively shine. Without band I’d have a much less impressive student life. The band program has given me most of the friends that I have today, and that is something I couldn’t replace. The band is by far the most important aspect of my high school career, and I really feel that it is a highly positive stepping stone in my life.…

I’ve also enjoyed dedicating part of every summer to improve my musical skills by attending various camps, including Longlake Camp for the Arts, Eastern U.S. Music Camp at Colgate University and Interlochen Camp for the Arts, where I was just invited to return on the basis of last summer’s performance. While I know that there may be others with comparable or better talent, my passion serves as the constant motivation for me in music as well as other aspects of my life. For example, being a dedicated Honor Roll student, taking weekly Temple classes and performing community service has been important and demanding as well. Managing these priorities has taught me a lot about tenacity, friendship and balance.…
